Irish retail sales growth accelerates in July thanks to motor trade

Ireland’s retail sales growth accelerated in July, data published by the Central Statistics Office showed on Thursday.

Retail sales rose by 0.8% in July from June, picking up pace from a 0.6% rise in June from May.

The best monthly growth in sales in July was in motor trades, up 9.2%, followed by hardware, paints & glass, up 3.0%. The worst monthly decline was in books, newspapers & stationery, down 3.2%, and electrical goods, down 1.4%.

On an annual basis, retail sales growth accelerated to 4.2% in July from 3.0% in June.

The sharpest annual increase in sales was in motor trades, which were up 7.7%, followed by other retail sales which were 6.3% higher. The worst annual fall was in food, beverages & tobacco at specialised stores, down 2.9%, and department stores, down 2.7%.
