Budget air carriers Ryanair Holdings PLC and Wizz Air Holdings PLC on Tuesday both reported increased passenger numbers in August compared to last year, though Wizz Air’s load factor slipped slightly. Dublin-based Ryanair said it carried 21.0 million passengers in August, up 2.4% from 20.5 million a year before, with a steady load factor of 96% across 114,000 flights operated during the month. For the 12 months to August, Ryanair carried 203.6 million passengers, up 6.0% from 192.0 million a year before, with a steady load factor of 94%. Budapest-based Wizz Air carried 6.9 million passengers in August, up 11% from 6.2 million a year before. However capacity was increased by 12%, so load factor slipped to 94.8% from 95.4%. In the rolling 12 months to August, Wizz carried 66.1 million passengers, up 6.6% from 62.1 million a year before. Capacity was increased by 5.4%, so load factor improved to 91.1% from 90.1%. Wizz noted that it remains one of the lowest emission airlines, with carbon dioxide emissions per revenue passenger kilometre decreasing by 2.5% on year in August to below 50 grams per RPK. It said this was the only second month ever, after February 2023, that it achieved a number below 50 grams per RPK, crediting its new A321neo jets from Airbus SE. Wizz noted that it flew its last flight from its now-closed Abu Dhabi base on August 31 and is now rebuilding its Tel Aviv base toward 24 routes by mid-September.
