London’s Heathrow airport said on Thursday that it had beaten its single-month traffic record with over 8 million passengers in August. This represents the highest passenger volume within a single month at any ‘major European hub’, Heathrow said. The airport recorded 270,000 passengers on August 1, reflecting its busiest day yet, while per-day departures and arrivals beat their previous record on August 22 at Terminal 5. Heathrow Chief Executive Thomas Woldbye praised the airport for maintaining ‘industry-leading’ service during the month, as the firm held onto to its claim as the ‘most punctual’ major European airport. In addition, Heathrow noted the UK government’s plans to expand the airport, which says it is ‘now operating at full capacity to the detriment of UK trade and connectivity’. Back in July, the airport operator submitted a proposal for a new runway which ‘could be operational within a decade’. The proposal indicated that this would be a 100% privately-financed project.
