Thales wins contract in Peru; marks collaboration with BAE Systems

ALN

Thales SA and BAE Systems PLC on Thursday marked a new phase in their ongoing collaboration on submarine sonar capability, while Thales also announced it has been awarded an air traffic modernisation contract in Peru.

Paris-based aerospace and defence company Thales and London-based defence contractor BAE Systems signed a memorandum of understanding to build upon a relationship spanning more than two decades and covering the development of a streamlined delivery construct to accelerate the deployment of advanced sonar solutions.

In support of the agreement, BAE Systems proposed the appointment of Thales as the pan-flotilla Main Sonar Design Authority and Integrator, a role that ‘recognises Thales’s deep expertise and ensures that the evolution of the submarine sonar enterprise remains centred on delivering enhanced capability to the armed forces’, the firm said.

‘The underwater battlespace is one of the most complex and unforgiving environments in defence, where threats are often unseen but always present.

‘By combining the complementary strengths of Thales and BAE Systems, we are bringing together world-class innovation and proven expertise to deliver cutting-edge sovereign capability for the UK to maintain decisive advantage at sea,’ said Paul Armstrong, managing director for Underwater Systems at Thales in the UK.

Thales also on Thursday said it has been awarded a new contract in Peru, together with its local industrial partner Stinville, to improve the country’s air traffic communication, via the implementation of the TopSky - Aeronautical Message Handling System.

This system will allow the Peruvian Corporation of Airports and Commercial Aviation, or Corpac, to ‘modernise’ the transmission of aeronautical messages, improve interoperability with other systems, and align with international standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organisation.

Shares in Thales were up 3.3% at €242.90 in Paris on Thursday afternoon. BAE Systems shares rose 6.0% to 1,942.50 pence in London.
