Whitbread PLC on Monday said it has appointed Sage Group PLC’s Jonathon Howell as an independent non-executive director. The Dunstable, England-based hospitality firm and Premier Inn owner said Howell will join the board and take over as chair of the audit committee, effective on January 1. Chartered accountant Howell has served as chief financial officer of Sage, a Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England-based software firm and payment services provider, since 2018, but plans to step down at the end of the year. Prior to that, he spent a combined two decades in the same role at Close Brothers Group PLC and the London Stock Exchange Group PLC. Howell is also non-executive director at Dublin-based data broker and credit reporting firm Experian PLC. Both Experian and Sage acknowledged Whitbread’s announcement on Monday. Whitbread Chair Christine Hodgson commented on Howell: ‘His international outlook and experience in technology and data-led businesses will be of great benefit to the Whitbread board as we continue to deliver on our key strategic priorities and five-year plan.’ Whitbread shares were up 1.2% at 3,144.95 on Monday morning in London, and have risen 2.7% in the last 12 months.
