IN BRIEF: BHP rolls out Australia’s first battery-electric locomotives

ALN

BHP Group Ltd - Melbourne, Australia-based diversified miner - Rolls out Australia’s first brand new purpose-built battery-electric locomotives in the Port Hedland. The two BELs, developed with Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania-based Westinghouse Air Brake Technologies Corp, will be trialled on one of BHP’s iron ore rail routes between its Pilbara mines and Port Hedland operations. Each locomotive houses a seven megawatt hour battery and uses regenerative braking to recapture energy on downhill runs. BHP says it supports the company’s efforts to cut Scope 1 and 2 emissions across its iron ore rail network. Commissioning is underway ahead of track trials to test performance in live operations.

Tim Day, BHP Western Australia Iron Ore Asset president, says: ‘It marks the beginning of an important trial to understand how this technology can help us reduce diesel use, lower associated operational greenhouse gas emissions and improve efficiency across our rail network.’
