Smurfit WestRock PLC on Tuesday said it will permanently close one of the paper machines at its La Tuque mill in Quebec, citing ongoing scale and cost challenges. The Dublin-based packaging firm said the machine has an annual production capacity of 127,000 tonnes of solid bleached sulfate. The firm said it will also close the extrusion facility in Pointe-aux-Trembles, Quebec, which converts grades produced on the La Tuque machine. The shutdowns will lead to a workforce reduction of around 30 roles at La Tuque and 60 at Pointe-aux-Trembles. Smurfit Westrock said the decision is part of its plan to strengthen its solid bleached sulfate portfolio and improve the long-term competitiveness of its paperboard operations. ‘This was a difficult but necessary decision to align with market realities and strengthen our long-term position,’ said Laurent Sellier, chief executive officer of the firm’s North America region. ‘We remain committed to our people, our operations in Canada and to delivering reliable, quality service to our customers.’ Shares in Smurfit WestRock were up 0.3% at 3,223.44 pence on Tuesday morning in London.
