Fermi secures final clean air permit for Texas private power grid

ALN

Fermi Inc on Thursday said the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality has granted final approval for a clean air permit at its Project Matador campus in Amarillo, Texas.

The Texas-based real estate investment trust, which is focused on building data centres, and trades as Fermi America, said the permit is for six gigawatts of clean natural gas-based power generation at the ‘landmark’ 11-gigawatt campus.

The company explained that commission approval confirms compliance with both state and federal emissions standards, and marks a ‘significant regulatory milestone’.

The granting of the permit is necessary for the commencement of the vertical phase of power generation construction, Fermi added.

Fermi noted that Project Matador is now advancing to the final stages of the project finance and tenant negotiations phase.

The company said the project is positioned at a ‘pivotal moment’ as the US enters a ‘historic surge’ in electricity demand owing to ‘AI, advanced manufacturing, industrial electrification, the reshoring of critical supply chains, EV adoption, defence modernisation, and the expansion of the digital economy.’

Fermi shares were trading 12% higher at $11.84 on Thursday morning in London.

‘Securing the second largest Clean Air Permit in the country is yet one more significant milestone for our 11 GW private grid campus,’ said Fermi America’s Chief Communications Officer & Director of Strategic Initiatives, Cathy Landtroop.

‘With the issuance of today’s air permit, the support of our fellow West Texans, and Toby’s foresight to lock up over 2 GW of long lead time power assets, Fermi is uniquely positioned to help America’s hyperscalers quickly secure the private power they need at scale.’
