HSBC promotes Carolyn Fairbairn to chair of UK banking division

ALN

HSBC Holdings PLC on Monday named the next chair of its UK banking division, who will assume the role before the end of the first half of the year.

The London-based lender has appointed Carolyn Fairbairn as non-executive chair of HSBC UK Bank PLC. She is currently chair of HSBC Group’s remuneration committee.

Fairbairn replaces Clara Furse, who has held the role for nine years, after ‘a robust succession process which considered both internal and external candidates’, the firm said.

HSBC Chair Brendan Nelson will step down as an independent non-executive director of HSBC UK Bank once Fairbairn’s appointment takes effect. Nelson, who had been serving as interim chair, was named permanent group chair at the start of December.

‘I believe that [Fairbairn]’s deep understanding of the UK business and regulatory landscape will be invaluable in the next phase of delivery of HSBC UK Bank’s growth strategy and as we deliver for our investors, customers, communities and employees,’ Nelson commented.

HSBC shares fell 3.7% to 1,342.40 pence on Monday morning in London.
