Vaalco says Etame West exploration water-bearing, will sidetrack bore

ALN

Vaalco Energy Inc on Monday said it has completed the drilling of the Etame West ET-14P exploration well, part of its phase 3 drilling programme offshore Gabon.

The company said it found the target zone to be water-bearing despite being underneath 10 metres of high-quality sands.

As such, the Texas-based energy company said it will plug and abandon the lower portion of the well, but will sidetrack the upper portion of the well bore to drill the ET-14H development well in the Main Fault Block of Etame, pending partner approval.

Vaalco expects operations to be completed in April.

Chief Executive Officer George Maxwell said: ‘When we committed to drilling the Etame West exploration well, we knew there was the geologic risk of not encountering commercial sands but the size of the potential reservoir made it a risk worth taking. Furthermore, we purposely designed the well so we could still utilize the well bore to drill a development well into a known productive area if the sands were non-commercial.’

Vaalco shares were up 1.3% at 385.00 pence each on Monday morning in London.
