Irish trade surplus widens in April as exports to US increase 15%

Ireland’s trade surplus widened sharply in April, boosted by a surging positive balance with the US, data published by the Central Statistics Office showed Wednesday.

The trade surplus grew by 34% to €4.88 billion in April from €3.63 billion in March.

Ireland’s trade surplus with the US increased by 40% to €3.56 billion in April from €2.55 billion in March.

Irish exports to the US rose 15% to €5.15 billion in April from €4.48 billion in March, while imports from the US fell 18% to €1.59 billion from €1.93 billion.

Ireland’s trade surplus with the EU narrowed by 0.4% to €2.76 billion in April from €2.77 billion in March, while its trade surplus with the UK was cut by 17% to €490 million in April from €590 million in March.

Ireland runs a trade deficit with the ’rest of the world’. However, this narrowed by 27% to €1.48 billion in April from €2.04 billion in March.
