Whitbread PLC on Thursday said it had secured planning approval for the development of its Norwich Nelson site. The Dunstable, Bedfordshire-based hotel and restaurant operator said its plan included the redevelopment of the Norwich Nelson hotel site into a new Premier Inn hotel, student accommodation, new homes commercial space and a public park. The first phase of the plan will see the delivery of the 248-bedroom Premier Inn hotel and the 492-room student accommodation units, along with a new public park and river walkway. The redevelopment scheme forms part of Whitbread’s asset intensification strategy to invest in under-utilised city centre locations. ‘The redevelopment will transform an ageing hotel into a new mixed-use destination which combines new high-quality hotel and living accommodation and public spaces in one of the city’s most important locations,’ said Richard Pearson, senior development manager for Whitbread. The company noted that its Norwich Nelson redevelopment scheme is Whitbread’s largest asset intensification project in the East of England. ‘The scheme represents a significant long-term investment by Whitbread in Norwich city centre and forms part of our strategy to reinvest in our key gateway locations across the UK,’ added Pearson.
