London Stock Exchange unveils plan for 24-hour trading starting 2027

ALN

London Stock Exchange Group PLC on Tuesday unveiled plans for 24-hour trading venue open on weekdays in London, with a view to improving access for investors in different time zones.

The trading venue operator has dubbed it London Stock Exchange 24, or LSE 24, and said it offers ‘global investors greater flexibility to respond to market events, access liquidity across time zones and manage risk’.

LSE 24 will operate Monday to Friday from 17:00 to 07:50 with a thirty-minute pause between 18:30 and 19:00 for end-of-day procedures.

‘It will operate separately from the London Stock Exchange’s Main Market, which will continue to operate its existing trading hours,’ LSEG explained.

LSE 24 is expected to be ready for testing by the end of the year, with exchange traded products slated as the first asset class to be launched in the first half of 2027. This still requires regulatory clearance.

‘ETPs are a natural starting point, given London’s established position as a leading international ETP hub and the strong global demand for products that provide efficient exposure to markets worldwide,’ LSEG noted.

‘The venue intends to draw on elements of central limit order book and request-for-quote functionality to support price transparency and on-demand liquidity, with the flexibility to expand into equities as the next step,’ the company continued.

It also sees the move supporting trading that makes use of artificial intelligence, enabling ‘clients to interact with market data, order management and execution workflows in more automated and intuitive ways’.

LSE PLC Chief Executive Julia Hoggett, who heads up Digital & Securities Markets at LSEG, framed this as ‘an important step in the evolution of our markets’.

‘By integrating with LSEG’s digital markets infrastructure, LSE 24 will help support deeper liquidity, greater efficiency and broader participation in our markets, reinforcing London’s position as a leading global financial centre,’ Hogett said.

Conditional on regulatory approval, LSE 24 will make use of LSEG’s Digital Securities Depository, currently in development, which is focused on digitising issuance, settlement and asset servicing.

LSEG shares were down 1.5% to 8,716.00 pence on Tuesday morning in London.
