Airlines shares end higher as earnings roll in

SAN FRANCISCO (AFX) -- Continental Airlines and AMR Corp. both closed higher Wednesday after posting stronger than expected second-quarter results. Ahead of Thursday's financial reports, Alaska Air Group rose 5% to $34.22 and JetBlue Airways added 2.1% to $22.80. Delta Air Lines , which announced a new top finance executive on Wednesday, will also report Thursday; shares rose 1% to $3.91 ahead of the report. Broadly, the Amex Airline Index rose 2.5% to 53.37 points.
