Wall Street airlines - Delta, Continental lead airline index higher

SAN FRANCISCO (AFX) -- Advancing shares of Delta Air Lines and Continental Airlines helped drive the Amex Airline Index 1% higher in Monday trading. ExpressJetHoldings added 2.3% to $10.08 in early dealings, while Continental Airlines rose 2.1% to $15.65. Last week, ExpressJet and Continental both reported second-quarter profits despite record fuel costs. Meanwhile, Delta saw its stock regain 1.7% to $3.54. Among the index components trading lower, Southwest Airlines slipped 0.2% to $14.37. Northwest Airlines lost 0.9% to $4.56. Outside the index, America West Holdings rose 3.5% to $8.34. Last week, the Air Transportation Stabilization Board signed off on the combination of America West and bankrupt US Airways . The ATSB has backed debt for both airlines.
