Wall Street airlines - As oil gains, down day for airline stocks - UPDATE 1

SAN FRANCISCO (AFX) - Airline stocks closed lower on Monday as a one-week high in crude oil prices weighed on the sector with shares of JetBlue Airways, Northwest Airlines and Delta Air Lines among the decliners. The Amex Airline Index fell 0.7% to 50.59 points. Among the session's advancers, ExpressJet Holdings added 2.2% to $10.07. Continental Airlines rose 0.5% to $15.40. Last week, ExpressJet and Continental both reported second-quarter profits despite record jet fuel prices. Meanwhile, Delta stock fell 2.3% to $3.40 with more than 5.1 million shares changing hands -- the most active in the group. Southwest Airlines slipped 1% to $14.26. Northwest Airlines lost 3.3% to $4.45. Outside the index, America West Holdings rose 2.6% to $8.28. Last week, the Air Transportation Stabilization Board signed off on the combination of America West and bankrupt US Airways . The ATSB has backed debt for both airlines. Frontier Airlines fell 4% to $11.92. Shares of Brazil's GOL Linhas Aereas Inteligentes S.A. lost 2.3% to $28.64.
