How to profit from Betting Exchanges (BEX)

How would you like to trade a market where you get large regular price swings every 10 minutes in the afternoon, seven days a week. A
market where all prices are set purely by supply and demand, few transaction costs, no middle men and you only pay commission if you win? Where you can freely act as a market maker and where you have direct market access and where you can create a spread for others to take?

Betfair has revolutionised the betting market and created an open platform for exchanging risk on sports events. This market is now viewed much more like a traditional financial risk market than an old fashioned betting market. Smart users have realised that there are huge opportunities on Betfair because they can buy and sell risk in much the same way they would in a normal financial market but without the burden of cost or the restricted access that is usually associated with traditional financial markets.

harrysdog - 22 Jul 2007 16:11 - 10346 of 10502

I see there is a chat thing.. but any plans for a forum on the betangel site? think it would be useful.

Scripophilist - 22 Jul 2007 21:17 - 10347 of 10502

Yes, one is in beta already. I've generally been negative on forums but I'm willing to give one a try.

harrysdog - 25 Jul 2007 18:40 - 10348 of 10502

After attending 2 betangel courses and buying the software.. been on bit of a roll.
Been doing it part time mainly trading the horses.. was close to having made enough profit to have covered the cost of the courses and the software..

Now its all changed. Profit slashed in half.

Gamblers often have beginners luck and Im wondering now if thats what I had.

I have of course made some mistakes..

top clangers for me:
- Betting to close to the off and having one side matched the other refused.
(investing in the racing channels subscription would have been cheaper)
- Closing out a bet that wasnt met on a Dutching attempt.. so costly!
(be interested to know best strategy for bets that are not taken when trying to match)

- Trying to recover "inplay" (I know this does work sometimes..its not at the moment!)
- Having ""Auto stake/auto update" ticked. having backs/lays at different prices...aaagh

"Gamblers"

You shouldn't be gambling or have that mindset. It has been difficult recently anyhow due to the weather so that may have forced you into a few mistakes. Glorious Goodwood is coming up next so things should settle again fairly soon.

The Betfair site is currently unavailable, due to technical problems. We apologise for this disruption to our service, and confirm that our Engineering Team is working to rectify the problems as quickly as possible.

Updates will be made to this page with additional information as and when it becomes available to us.

Anyone still trying to make money out of the betting exchanges?

With football matches coming thick and fast now on TV I have been trading / betting on a regular basis over the last few weeks. Becuase I follow a lot of football I must admit most of my positions are taken from a 'feel' for how a particular match is going once in play and try to find value without getting greedy. My favourite matches tend to be those where a short favourite falls behind in the early part of the match. A great recent example was Barca v Deportivo, a wonder goal by Deprotivo in the first few minutes turned Barca's odds from 1.2 to 2.1 as the match progressed, at which point I backed Barca, a few minutes later the equaliser duly arrived.

Another example was Swansea v Horsham, initially Swansea's odds were 1.19 but after going 2-1 down had moved out to 1.6. Swansea pulled themselves together and led 4-2 at half-time. In my view that particualr game was always going to have goals and I also backed overs 3.5, a done deal after the first three goals arrived in three minutes!

It's quite interesting to read the BF Soccer Forum; I am staggered at the amount of posters who take positions on matches without doing any research or waiting for a game to even start, pure gambling. If you back 2.5 overs before a match between two evenly matched teams, you may well be disappointed; why not wait until the match gets going and then take a position?

I must admit I came very close to coming a cropper on the Liverpool v Marseille match last night, by laying overs 3.5 after L'ppol had scored twice. I always thought that there would be more goals in the game, but waited far too long before laying my bet off and greening up. In fact I actually had it in my mind that shortly before and after half-time are dangerous periods for teams to score and I should have acted on that thought. Once Liverpool has scored their third, I had to wait for about 30mins before my bet was once more back in the money and able to trade out for a profit. Somewhat nerve racking. However had I laid for overs 2.5 before the match, the bet would never have been in the money and would have been a losing position. By backing under 3.5 I at least gave myself some room for manoeuvre.

SOmething else I have been victim to is very very late goals. The last ten minutes can be a dangerous time to remain in a trade, but sometimes also quite profitable. Beware of those last minute goals, Celtic v Shaktar caught me cold, the last kick of the match, literally.

Just a few thoughts.

As far as tonight's games are concerned I won't be taking any positions before kick off, but at first glance I think Arsenal will be too strong for Steaua, although it depends on what side Wenger puts out. The odds are poor to back Arsenal so won't bother unless Steaua can score first.

Rangers' odds look quite enticing 3.15 to back with Lyon favourites, quite surprising considering Rangers beat Lyon 3-0 in an earlier match.

The Roma v Man Utd game is a mere formality and a dangerous game to take a position. Neither side need to win, albeit Roma may seek some revenge for their 7-1 stuffing last year, I would think Fergie will give some of his squad players a run out.

I think the Rangers match will hold the most interest for me and will be looking to back if they look like having a good game.
