PC & MAC CLINIC - On line problem solving. (CPU)

Crocodile - 16 Dec 2002 03:59

Just switched on spare PC this morning.
Did the initial start up - but end up with a black monitor and the cursor in the top left corner of the monitor.

Any idea what has happened?

What O/S?

What do yo mean by the initial startup?

Is it starting to load the O/S or does it stop before that?

Timeliner - 09 Feb 2004 11:22 - 1310 of 11003

It takes an age to load the operating system, before giving the blank screen/cursor.

Might be the operating system which is a bit low - P2 Celeron 350 with 384 mb ram.

Optimist - 09 Feb 2004 11:30 - 1311 of 11003

I have seen this before and never fully sorted it.

Try loading in safe mode and make a note of the names of any drivers that it hangs on. Also try loading the last good configuration.

Thanks Neil.

Been a bit hectic this morning - and going out shortly for birthday meal at Skegness but will try when we get back.

Thanks

Chris

Please can somebody tell me how to adjust the time on Windows ME so that it displays on the bottom right of the toolbar as a 24 hour clock rather than a 12 hour clock?

Optimist - 09 Feb 2004 14:26 - 1314 of 11003

Hilary

It's in Regional and Language options in the Control Panel

DocProc - 09 Feb 2004 14:27 - 1315 of 11003

Control Panel

Regional and Language Options

Regional Options Tab
Standards and formats
Customise
Time

To - Do this

Display time in a 24-hour format - Type uppercase H or HH for the hour

Display time in a 12-hour format - Type lowercase h or hh for the hour

Display leading zeros in single-digit hours - Type two characters, HH or hh
Suppress the display of leading zeros in single-digit hours, minutes, or seconds - Type a single uppercase H, or lowercase letter, such as h, m, or s

Display a single letter to indicate AM or PM - Type lowercase t
Display two letters to indicate AM or PM - Type lowercase tt
Display text - Type single quotation marks (') around text

Hope that helps.

hilary - 09 Feb 2004 14:39 - 1316 of 11003

Many thanks guys. That had been driving me round the twist for absolutely ages.

Ironically, I'd seen the Regional options menu but hadn't realised what the difference was between the upper and lower case H.

Anyone know why I cant send WINRAR or WINZIP files through Outlook?
It just causes the programme to Freeze. No problem with any other type of files.

Iain,

Take a look at Mozilla Thunderbird:
http://www.mozilla.org/products/thunderbird

open source, fully functional and i have never had it crash on me!

Iain,

Thunderbird 0.5 was released yesterday and is only available on the ftp.mozilla.org server (atm), as such it is flooded.

Keep trying, and you will get there.

If I still have my zip file at home (it runs from a self contained folder which I have sitting on my desktop, no install, no files cluttering your system - lovely), ill mail it to you.

J.

Iain,

I have 0.5 already installed (got it before the big rush last night), however if you happen to have someone around 5'3 tall, long hair, 20-30 and of the female persuasion and can get her into a postage box, please send to the usual address.
