PC & MAC CLINIC - On line problem solving. (CPU)

ebuyer have never had any problems with them :-)

Spaceman - 27 Feb 2004 09:19 - 1379 of 11003

MB, They have mostly been very good but I had one bad problem where they sent the wrong thing and then took 2 weeks to replace it, very frustrating but at least their online order update system is updated quicly. I think this sort of problem is the price we have to pay for dealing with low cost internet based companies which have low staff numbers.

Trader2 - 27 Feb 2004 09:30 - 1380 of 11003

Low staff numbers at Dabs?? - well my mail about above has never been replied to by the same person twice! How many are in the Customer Services Team? Michelle, Anne, Stella and Graham have all made their individual contributions - eventually - but contributions that have yet to lead to a refund.

Spaceman - 27 Feb 2004 09:35 - 1381 of 11003

Trader2, Its relative, they are a pretty big company. I do agree with you that this sort of thing is a pain but I chose to continue to use them knowing that these things happen, you will probably chose not to ;-)

Trader2 - 27 Feb 2004 11:23 - 1382 of 11003

Space - I've had worse experiences with ebuyer - but still go back to them when they offer a good price. I always make a point of posting about exceptionally good and bad experiences.

The trend is for keener prices and poorer service. Trend will no doubt continue - as they do.

The cost of selling goes down and the cost of buying goes up.

I'd like to see it possible to easily sue for small damages - to stop the above trend pushing the cost of buying too high and achieve a reasonable balance cost balance.

Help - i've got real problems with my machine running slow due to high cpu usage.
What can I do about this?
The offending programs are advfn L2 (I also take the moneyam one via etrade and would be happy to dump advfn except I can't make the screens small enough in large mode - in particular I need to see the trades). I also strongly suspect the spreadright software from IG is doing something it shouldn't or is somehow conflicting with finspreads. Either seems to run ok as long as the other one is not loaded. When both loaded cpu usage runs near permanently at 100% and even when i close them I don't appear to get back as much cpu time as I would if I'd never loaded them in the first place.

I have a P4 1600 with 768 ram.

Spaceman - 27 Feb 2004 18:25 - 1384 of 11003

CC a few questions, have you checked for Spyware etc? is you Hard DIsk fragnmented or full? What Operating Sytem are you using?

CC - 27 Feb 2004 19:47 - 1385 of 11003

Spaceman - yes checked for usual stuff with spybot. I reguarly run the defrag and delete all the temporary internet files.
Running Win2000.
Have been thinking about dumping advfn L2 (even though I like it) and using moneyam through etrade all the time. If I did this I could get another monitor with the money saved.

Kayak - 27 Feb 2004 19:50 - 1386 of 11003

CC, In windows 2000 you can use Task Manager to tell you which processes are gobbling up the CPU. If it's IE and you have a number of IEXPLORE processes, End Process to see which one it is. If it's just one because you've used ctrl-N to create new windows, try again without using ctrl-N, i.e. using the icon each time.

Spaceman - 27 Feb 2004 20:36 - 1387 of 11003

CC
have you had any other browser type problems? eg slowness or odd bookmarks? any strange behavior when you type a wrong URL? add search engines poping up eg coolwebsearch?

I doubt if ADVFN is the problem but I dont use them for L2. Cant comment on IG.

CC - 27 Feb 2004 23:18 - 1388 of 11003

ADVFN L2 is a known issue with gobbling cpu time. A year ago it wasn't such an issue but they have added so many bells and whistles to the java I am beginning to find it unuseable now when the market moves fast as it runs up to 2 seconds delayed as my cpu can't keep up.
Kayak-been looking at task manager all day - won't use ctrl N on Monday and try to get to the bottom of it.
What's frustrating is that this problem has only started this month - wasn't running anything new when it started happening although now I've added IG as well problem has moved from an odd annoyance to a constant problem when market is busy.
Going to try ADFVN old L2 feed on Monday and I can live without IG most of the time - the spreads are crap.

I do have the odd problem when I open the advfn or moneyam home page - sometimes that IE window freezes for up to 10 seconds - I'm sure it's something to do with the damn popups. When it freezes I have no control over it whatsoever - can't minimise or anything then suddenly the popups windows appear and I get control back. This happens about once in 10 times I access these homepages.

Spaceman - 28 Feb 2004 00:34 - 1389 of 11003

CC i dont think you have hijack problems but its probably worth going to www.spywareinfo.com and downloading and running CWshredder, this will clear any coolwebsearch and similar hijacks. Make sure you close all browsers before running it.

Kayak - 28 Feb 2004 00:47 - 1390 of 11003

CC, if you find the answer to the popup freezing problem tell me, I've had it for years. Only solution I know of is a popup stopper.

Spaceman - 28 Feb 2004 00:49 - 1391 of 11003

K, I get it even with a popup stopper !

Kayak - 28 Feb 2004 00:56 - 1392 of 11003

Change popup stopper! Mine gets rid of the problem except for the odd ones which it doesn't manage to stop.

axdpc - 28 Feb 2004 13:36 - 1393 of 11003

Does anyone know how to copy the drop-down list contents of a web page into
a text file?

Thanks
