rather than pick out individual stocks to trade, it can often be worthwhile to trade the indices themselves, especially in times of high volatility.
for those so inclined, i attach below charts for FTSE and FTSE 250, though one might equally be tempted to trade Dow or S&P, which is significantly broader in its coverage, or even NASDAQ
for ease of reading, i have attached 1 year and 3 month charts in each instance

FTSE
i recollect that 6070 is quite a serious support and now resistance
the index is fast approaching this

WOW!!!!
both FTSE and DOW have exploded!
perhaps this is more important for FTSE where 6070 was passed in a cloud of dust
==============
somewhat momentary, but still above 6070 (ftse)

just banked a very nice 250+ points on this morning's Dow at 16350 - just below a potential hurdle
wasn't a large stake by any means, but after the battering of the last couple of weeks, more than welcome

i'm sure i'll be back in later, not least because there must surely be a big bear squeeze when US actually opens

Temporary topping out on the 5 minute indicies charts? I'm out of my longs on FTSE and Dow to wait for the open and whatever that may bring! Just like you cynic, decent returns this morning and on the Dow o/night - extremely welcome after last few days losses!

FTSE
now struggling to hold above the important 6070 level, but not weakening much either
DOW
16,359 certainly proved a step too far this morning, but i felt that dipping a very small toe back in at 16,272 eliminated a fair bit of risk, and if there's an opportunity to bank 40/60 points prior to the opening i shall do so

i'm not that bloody clever!
however, it helps when you trade as you see (as was said to me) and can actually pay attention to the gyrations and above all, not get too greedy
in fact, i wouldn't be surprised to see the indices tracking higher tomorrow, though slightly disturbing that FTSE could not hold 5070 nor DOW (currently) 16,359

no .... sorry to be ambiguous ..... it has tried that hurdle a few times during the day and failed to hold, but it could conceivably have another crack at it during the evening
