Dear All,

I am organising this years MoneyAM Golf Day which is in aid of the Macmillan Cancer Fund. It will be a great day out and all for a worthy cause.

Macmillan dedicates itself to giving every person in the land equal and ready access to the best information, treatment and care for cancer.

As this years event is a charity event, the total cost of the whole day will be 85 (around 20 - 25 will be donated from every entry to the Macmillan Cancer Fund). This will include all golfing activities on the day, bacon rolls on arrival, lunch, an evening dinner, and prize giving ceremony.

The winners of this years event (the afternoon's Texas Scramble) will get 1 years free subscription to MoneyAM Level 2, and the prestigious MoneyAM Annual Golf Challenge Cup which the team will share.

Second and Third place teams will each receive medals, plus 6 months worth of MoneyAM Level 2

MoneyAM will also get prizes for 1, 2, 3, nearest the pin and longest drive in the morning Stableford competition. I will present a Wooden Spoon on the day, so you should all be wary of that!

Itinerary for the Day

8.30 am onwards: Arrival at VGC Meet and greet bacon rolls on arrival

9.30 am onwards: 11 hole Stableford Tee off in groups of 3/4 from 8.30AM although I expect a number will arrive after 9.30am, either pre arranged or allocated on the day

From 12.30: Light rolling Lunch after completion of morning Stableford. Menu - Cold Meat Buffet with New Potatoes and Salad.

1.30 pm: 18 Hole Texas Scramble Pre-arranged teams of 4, each player must hit at least 3 drives and handicap is 1/8th of combined total. Individual entries will be teamed up by organiser in advance

What is Texas Scramble? This is a game of 3 or 4 player teams. All players in a team tee off then the team chooses their best drive and all 3 or 4 will play their second shot from that spot. This continues until the hole is completed, including putting out. There are many variations of handicapping and play, so I have chosen a percentage of combined HCP, with each team member taking 3 compulsory drives.

7.00 pm Evening Meal and Prize Giving:

Starter: Homemade Soup

Main: Chicken Breast with Gruyere cheese wrapped in Bacon

Dessert: Fruit crumble served with Custard

As with previous years, I will need to collect the cash of all participants up front, and I think we will follow the method we have done before:

Cheques payable to: R W L Colby
And please send your cheques (with a note giving your MoneyAM username) to the following address: Ian Taylor MoneyAM Ltd Thames House 18 Park Street London SE1 9ER

Ian will then forward them on to me.

The nearest train station is St Albans City which is about 1km north, and there is a very good 3 star Quality Inn 300 yards away on London Road for around 75 per night.

This years event which will be the best ever. I hope to see familiar and new faces alike in what could prove to be the biggest Golf day we have had so far. Although I am sure competition will be fierce, this is also designed to be an enjoyable day for all.

If you are interested in coming along (and all are welcome), please can you indicate so on this thread, and we can then start collating numbers and collecting the cash.

I look forward to seeing you all there,

cynic - 23 Jan 2007 07:02 - 22 of 207

sorry for being ignorant, but what is the link between Verulam GC and the Ryder Cup? ...... The very first (almost a preliminary trial) was at Wentworth in 1926 from memory

Bullshare - 23 Jan 2007 07:19 - 23 of 207

Cynic: I think Sam Ryder's home club was the Verulam

cynic - 23 Jan 2007 07:37 - 24 of 207

ah ... thank you kind sir .... perhaps he supplied the grass seed for the greens!

Bobcolby - 23 Jan 2007 11:56 - 25 of 207

Martini

The club do not encourage using buggies because there are a couple of road crossings but I will have a word with the secretary and try to reserve it for you. I remember you telling me you would need a buggy

Bobcolby - 23 Jan 2007 12:09 - 26 of 207

Lancslad

Tony. Nice to hear from you again.

All donations will be gratefully received by the Macmillan fund. I can include the cash in the proceeds of the Golf day or purchase raffle prizes. Gifts of raffle prizes will be really appreciated.

Martini - 23 Jan 2007 12:17 - 27 of 207

Cheers Bob now I just need someone to play the long strokes so I can come on the short ones. :) Wheres MG when you need him?

chocolat - 23 Jan 2007 13:05 - 28 of 207

Thought you'd be less lethal in a tuk tuk, M ;)

I am sure Sam must have supplied the seed for the greens.

Sam Ryder launched his seed catalogue business in 1895 from St Albans because he considered it to be the "Centre of the Kingdom". The business became very successful. Sam was a prominent member on the local council from 1903 -1916, and served a term as Mayor. At the end of his term of office as Mayor he was tired and run down.

A local minister suggested he took up golf. He took private lessons for a year and then joined Verulam Golf Club. He served as club Captain in 1910, 11 and notably 1926.

Sam, his friends, Abe Mitchell and George Duncan, came up with the idea of an international competition between America and GB/Ireland in 1926. 1926 was supposed to be the first official Ryder Cup and was played at Wentworth, the British team won 13 to 1 with one match halved. Due to the uncertainty caused by the General strike, it was not known how many Americans could travel, and Sam decided not to present his Cup officially that year. The Wentworth Club provided Gold Medals for the British players. The first official Ryder Cup was held in the USA in June 1927.

Before the team set off for USA, they played a 36 hole match at Verulam. Sam put up the prize money and this was the first recorded sighting of the Ryder Cup. The cup was presented to the PGA for safe keeping.

The cup was made by Mappin & Webb for 100 guineas, paid by Sam Ryder. The figure on top of the cup is based on Sams private tutor, Abe Mitchell.

America won the inaugural Ryder Cup at Worcester G&CC Massachusetts.

Verulam Golf Club is "The home of the Ryder Cup"

Oh No. Does that mean I have to get in the same vehicle as the Maxi Maestro Princess - England's engineering design guru ???

Didn't know there were any long strokes - thought it was all about speed - so I only ever do short strokes.

Go on then - if that's the only way we'll get royalty to attend the event.

Cheers mg and who pray has been editing my posts??

Bullshare - 23 Jan 2007 15:54 - 32 of 207

Bob; Does the buggy have a built in fridge, very important;-0

Bobcolby - 23 Jan 2007 15:58 - 33 of 207

Do not need a fridge, I am arranging for stewards all around the course to serve ice cold Martini(s)

EWRobson - 24 Jan 2007 14:42 - 34 of 207

Bob Well done for promoting a charity event. Having thought about it quite a lot I feel I should raise a concern with the format. Its a long way for a number of us to go for what is primarily a team event and a format that I look upon as 'fun' rather than 'serious'. Quite a strong argument for that as golf should be fun but its really a matter of balance: it should be enjoyable but needs for many of us to be competetive.

Last summer I played in the Hoodless Brennan charitable event at Brocket Hall. Both morning and afternoon were team events. The morning was a 9-hole Texas Scramble over the easier Melbourne course. The afternoon was a better ball (best 2 of 4 at each hole) over the Palmerston course. You felt at the end that you had had a really good day's golf. It would also be possible to keep individual cards in the afternoon for those who wished to carry on the MoneyAM individual event without significantly holding up play.

If you were to change to this format, it wouldn't be going back to the drawing board, rather changing detail. I would certainly enter a team (albeit of Iain Rennie Hospice at Home supporters - the locals will be aware of the significance of this offer!).

Eric

Thanks for your comments and I hope to see you again at this year at Verulam.

Texas Scrambles are fun and, in my experience, very competitive. They are very popular with societies at Verulam GC.

I prefer to stick with a tried and tested format. Our golf professional does not recommend playing the scramble in the morning.

There is no MoneyAM sponsored Individual prize this year. I am actively looking for sponsors for the 11 hole Stableford, if your Iain Rennie supporters could help it will be very much appreciated.

Bob

EWRobson - 25 Jan 2007 12:29 - 36 of 207

Bob I wonder how many views you have sought. We do have Texas Scramble format at our club, say once a month, as a variation to other more competetive formats. However we wouldn't think of doing an invitation event that way and I can't think of any other Kent club that would do that. I think its best to be straight - I wouldn't contemplate the journey if you stick to the proposal nor would I enter a team. My understanding is that this also applies to a number of those who have participated in the last two years. Sorry to be a wet blanket! Eric

Fundamentalist - 25 Jan 2007 13:12 - 37 of 207

Ill add my opinion FWIW

I think the structure of the day is aimed at being all inclusive and structured to accomodate non-golfers as much if not moreso than those who take the game a bit more seriously.

Texas scramble is an ok format for a bit of laugh on a course you are familiar with but for me is the worst possible format to try and appreciate a course that is new to you. Ultimately you hit a drive, an iron shot from the fairway and inevitably are then putting (on a par 4 for example). Many shots you play are irrelevant (a team member has already hit a great shot before you play) and you play few recovery shots. You also get a very one-dimensional view of a course because invariably you play it the standard way. The only way to liven it up is to take some aggressive risks, something you dont want to do on a course you dont know. I assume the pro prefers it knowing that it will speed the game up if there is a high proportion of high handicappers/non regular golfers.

for me the right format for a day like this is a slightly later start 10am ish (as some are going to be travelling long distances) with a fun 9 hole comp in the morning (texas scramble here is fine) then lunch then an 18 hole stableford either singles pairs or team (best 2 of 4 for example)

I would like to bring a team to the event especially as I have a very strong affinity with Macmillan but know i would struggle to get 3 guys to come and play based on that format.

cynic - 25 Jan 2007 13:54 - 38 of 207

fundie ..... merely en passant ..... Texas Scramble is actually surprisingly slow ..... One of the best formats we have adopted is Geensome Foursomes, which is not only quick but also allows the more serious golfer to play plenty of shots.

for thiose who don't know .... in Greensomes, all drive and then you choose which drive to play; alternate shots thereafter .... Another good variation is St Andrews Foursomes where both drive and again choose the best drive, but it is determined before you go out who will take the second shots of the odd holes, and who on the evens
