How to profit from Betting Exchanges (BEX)

How would you like to trade a market where you get large regular price swings every 10 minutes in the afternoon, seven days a week. A
market where all prices are set purely by supply and demand, few transaction costs, no middle men and you only pay commission if you win? Where you can freely act as a market maker and where you have direct market access and where you can create a spread for others to take?

Betfair has revolutionised the betting market and created an open platform for exchanging risk on sports events. This market is now viewed much more like a traditional financial risk market than an old fashioned betting market. Smart users have realised that there are huge opportunities on Betfair because they can buy and sell risk in much the same way they would in a normal financial market but without the burden of cost or the restricted access that is usually associated with traditional financial markets.

Where do I get SIS :-)

HelenW - 16 Sep 2005 11:19 - 4655 of 10502

Have been following this thread as I am going on the course, but rather confused by all the jargon and feel I might be out of my depth! Haven't signed up to Betfair yet as I thought it best to wait. Have done the run through, (and for Betangel)though. What is 'wedge' and what is SIS?

Fundamentalist - 16 Sep 2005 11:45 - 4656 of 10502

Morning all

Scrip - are you about next week - if so whens good for me to drop you a line

Helen

SIS is the live feed of racing pictures you get in betting shops
wedge - a large amount of money

DocProc - 16 Sep 2005 11:48 - 4657 of 10502

HelenW

SIS = Satellite Information Services

http://www.satelliteinfo.co.uk/

A "wedge" is 'a big roll of pound notes in your pocket' on the one hand or perhaps even 'a right big chunk of dosh' on the other.

A wedge is a simple thing used to push two things apart. I guess you could say, wedges are used for 'leverage'?

Know anyone who's got one?

Perhaps after the course, eh? ;-)

HelenW - 16 Sep 2005 11:50 - 4658 of 10502

Thanks, guys. I will start saving for a wedge right away!

compoundup - 16 Sep 2005 13:11 - 4659 of 10502

Hah! only 8 grand per year for a 5-year SIS feed contract. I think I'll have 2 ;-)

Saw a wedgie in the bookies last week - any good?

Fundamentalist - 16 Sep 2005 13:13 - 4660 of 10502

Pantomime Price a beauty of a drifter

Fundamentalist - 16 Sep 2005 13:18 - 4661 of 10502

Scripophilist - 16 Sep 2005 13:27 - 4662 of 10502

Fundamentalist - 16 Sep 2005 14:23 - 4663 of 10502

Scripophilist - 16 Sep 2005 14:25 - 4664 of 10502

Scripophilist - 16 Sep 2005 14:29 - 4665 of 10502

1.10 turned over on the 14:25, Hat trick coming up?

Scripophilist - 16 Sep 2005 16:00 - 4666 of 10502

Obilque, 16:00, keeping an eye on it.

Scripophilist - 16 Sep 2005 16:05 - 4667 of 10502

LOL! Lost, I'll explain how I spotted it in a minute.

Scripophilist - 16 Sep 2005 16:14 - 4668 of 10502

I don't know if anybody was watching this on Bet Angel but every now and again somebody was coming into the market and laying 10k+ on the horse. Some very big volume on the lay side going through. Just looked so obvious to me, so obvious. So I laid it a 1.78

DocProc - 16 Sep 2005 17:31 - 4669 of 10502

I found the following web site, which seems to give some helpful information and also some examples of Backing and Laying for novices like me:

Thanks for that DocProc - I will read and learn! H

Scripophilist - 16 Sep 2005 22:15 - 4671 of 10502

Chelsea's odds look a little skinny to me away to Charlton, currently priced @ 1.62

Charlton are off to a good start and it is well documented that local matches are much more likely to be closely contested.

ptholden - 16 Sep 2005 22:46 - 4672 of 10502

Scrip

Backing Charlton on this one. Chelsea although undefeated are not playing well. Charlton on the other hand have had a very good start and are scoring goals. If there is a good time to turn the Blues over it might just be now. Only a small bet, but with the odds as they are it does have its attractions.
