no idea who operates the training system (nearly said class system!), but i think it's primarily aimed at non-english-speaking immigrants

mind you, it's terrifying how many people of all ages really cannot read and write .... and as for basic arithemetic!

Trouble with these training courses apprenticeships etc etc, they havent changed since once I was out of work for 3 months about 15 years ago.

To get benefits you had to go no ifs and buts, had to read all the newspapers first thing for jobs advertised, taught how to use a computer putting together your CV for about 6 weeks to a month, and then watch a few videos on interview techniques, get a visit from a health and safety expert for a half day and then are given a telephone directory and told to ring companys asking if they have vacancies.

What a bore it was and the trainers were useless, just in it for the monthly cheque from the government.

I gather from what ive heard it hasnt changed at all.

Cyners yep cheaper oncosts. No holiday pay no redundancy pay no overtime etc etc etc.

The whole jobs, work, pay, employment arena has changed and is unlikely to ever be as it was. More and more jobs have been deskilled due to technology. Retail is in a steady decline and once it has bottomed out is unlikely to ever improve. Every time we have a recession, companies use the opportunity to unload staff, cut costs and make their businesses more streamlined.

Even if we have good economic times again, full employment will only be due to low pay, zero hours and self employed status jobs. It is just a fact of life for the future. There will be two classes of work. There will be the highly skilled work and the jobs that anyone could do. That is the trend, like it or not. The bulk of people will be paid poorly. There is going to be a permanent underclass of people.

I remember in the 1960s, commentators would say that we had a golden future with a lot of work being done by machines and computers. We would all have massive amounts of leisure time to do all the things we wanted and people would only have to work a few hours a week.

You would have to be stupid, to believe that. I used to wonder how all this was to be paid for. The answer is that it didn't happen and won't.

i guess this is common across many industries, so it adds significantly to your class of forced self-employed, but not for the reasons you and and fred like to tout!

I dont go for what Hays says, theirs still plenty of skilled jobs in this country and the opportunity for the government to invest in them.

The real reason we have low pay is that confidence as been at rock bottom , banks have not lent money, confidence amongst job holders is very low as they know if they are laid off they wont find another job (and someone will walk straight into there position) and therefore darent ask for a pay rise etc etc. Its basicaly FEAR ruling the jobs market at the moment not growth or good employers.

And I dont believe Retail is in decline either In fact I would argue that its expanding.

Whats happening in retail is that we have an attack on the established companys by the up and coming discounters.

Just look at the number of new smaller chain outlets that are opening up and down the country. eg, Sainsburys tie up with Netto.

for sure general confidence in all walks of life and businesses has taken a real bashing over the last 4/5 years
wage levels and employment will also always lag behind the trend - in both directions

unfortunately for most, the eurozone economies are all still a total mess, some even worse than others ..... even germany has had to own up

the rest of the world is also still not exactly chipper, as is shown by the (new) low level of chemical traffic ...... certainly we find ourselves needing to be ever more clever and nimble in constructing deals
