Cook reputation remains 'intact' despite torrid times

Thomas Cook has emerged from 18 months of poor financial results and restructuring with its consumer reputation intact, research suggests.

A survey conducted for Travel Weekly indicates that more than two out of five UK adults (42%) expect to interact with Thomas Cook this year regardless of whether they have an overseas holiday.

Explore Research asked 500 adults how likely they are “to engage in some way” with the company by searching online, visiting a shop, checking a brochure or making a call, whether or not they book. It found 9% “definitely” would and 33% were “likely” to (including 14% “very likely” to).

Two-thirds of respondents said they were aware of Cook’s financial problems, yet half reported no change in how they viewed the company and 15% were more likely to book with Cook than a year ago.

Younger adults appeared most likely to engage with Cook, 48% saying they would do or be likely to.

Explore also asked consumers how they view Thomas Cook – as a travel agency, tour operator or travel company, or retailer of holidays or package holidays?

It found 29% regard Cook as an agency first and 16% as a travel company, with 24% thinking of holidays and 18% of package holidays. Just 8% consider Cook a tour operator and 1% an airline.

A separate survey by PR Week/OnePoll, published last week, suggested Cook retains the best consumer reputation among UK agencies. Cook polled top with 23% against 10% for Thomson and 5% for First Choice, with Virgin Holidays on 16%. Explore surveyed 500 UK adults online in March

Thomas Cook to fly to Caribbean from Manchester


Thomas Cook Airlines is to offer a range of new flights to the Caribbean from Manchester next winter when it will become the only airline offering services to St Lucia and Antigua outside London.


On November 10 it will launch a weekly flight from Manchester to St Lucia, continuing to Barbados, operated by an Airbus A330 aircraft. A Manchester to Antigua service, also continuing on to Barbados, will start on December 19.


Thomas Cook group head of air travel Christoph Debus said: "It's fantastic news that we're able to offer UK travellers seat-only and holidays from Manchester to some of the most beautiful islands in the Caribbean, initially for the coming winter season.


"With the recent reduction in connections from Manchester to Gatwick limiting the travel options for those from the Midlands, the North and Scotland to connect with Caribbean flights from London, we're pleased to be able to offer more flexibility and choice for our customers, competing with the very best scheduled and charter carriers."

Cook tests three store designs ahead of UK-wide shop revamp

Thomas Cook has started a month-long test of three new store concepts and will choose one to spearhead a refresh of its high street presence.

The company gave three stores – in Stowmarket, Stamford and King’s Lynn – a makeover in different styles and colours last week and will decide by the end of the month which to roll out nationally. It plans to have 90 stores revamped by September.

Speaking exclusively to Travel Weekly, retail director Joanna Wild said the refresh would signal to customers and staff that Thomas Cook is back.

“These are traditional stores and the idea is to make them clean, fresh, modern. They will look bigger, brighter,” she said.

“There are three different concepts, with different colours, different graphics, different chairs. We’ll decide in the next two to three weeks which to roll out and [aim to] have 90 smaller stores refreshed by September – the end of the financial year.” The programme will continue beyond that.

Wild declined to say how much the programme would cost, but described it as “a significant investment”, adding: “The refresh programme shows our commitment to the high street.”

It comes alongside a ‘store of the future’ programme for large outlets, the first of which launched in Leeds’ White Rose shopping centre in December. Wild reported revenue at the White Rose store in the first three months had exceeded Cook’s target by more than 50%.

Wild spent the past week addressing meetings of store managers around the country, explaining the new cluster-manager approach to running shops.

She said: “Some store managers may step down [to become assistant managers]. Some will be promoted to cluster managers. Some will leave.”

But Wild insisted: “Staff have a future in retail. There will be opportunities for promotion. People can see we have a future, can see the pace at which we are changing and that we have a sustainable and profitable business – and the pace is infectious.”

How bizarre to choose Stowmarket! A sleepy market town. I would have though they would choose a big outlet in a major city. Not sure the residents of Stowmarket will want 'clean, fresh, modern'.

Agreed Harry, places like the White Rose shopping centre and Bluewater seem to be far more appropriate for that type of concept.

Yes, comfortable middle class, middle England. The train from Norwich to London is absolutely packed during the morning rush hour with commuters getting on at Diss, Stowmarket and Ipswich, so presumably those people are earning London wages but living the Suffolk lifestyle? No complaint from me though as Harriet Green, Chief Executive seems to know what she's doing and sp still on the up!

I agree GF / cynic i'm holding nothing right now markets due a big correction in my view ,then i'm back in. It could be that sell in May (or April in this case) will work this year.

US bombing sounds like a one-off nutter - home made devices, not terrorist associated. USA futures look okay at the moment. I'm happy to keep holding this share - trading update due sometime in May and all the indicators look positive.

Thomas Cook now ‘sets the standard’ for mobile

Thomas Cook’s new mobile site is a model of good design, according to travel technology consultant Paul Richer.

Writing a blog for World Travel Market, Richer said: ‘In the past I have been critical of Thomas Cook’s presence on this channel.

‘In fact, if you have got time for some mobile surfing you will see that Thomas Cook is now setting the standard.

‘The organisation’s new mobile site is a model of good design, only slipping back to the PC website when you reach the booking form; quite a transformation, so 10 out of 10.’
