Rightmove tumbles on talk of Google entering UK property market
The mighty Google strikes again. A report that the company is planning to move into the UK property market has sent shares in Rightmove tumbling by more than 10%.
Google is said to be talking to UK estate agents about launching a property portal, which of course would cut across Rightmove's business. Hence a 70.5p decline in the latter's share price to 488p.
But Lorna Tilbian at the company's broker has issued a note playing down the threat from Google. She said:
Google has launched a property site in Australia, and could extend this to the UK in 2010. We believe that such a move would be an attempt to drive traffic through its site, but do not believe that it poses a material threat to Rightmove.
In our view, Rightmove has a firmly established position as one of the UK's leading websites and has a commanding share of more than 80% of the four leading property portals. The value added by Rightmove in generating leads is clearly proven, and the cost of the product is a small component of an estate agent's cost base and remains modest in comparison with newspaper advertising.

They've had a good run of late, well out-performing FTSE All Share Media.
But the housing market must be a concern for them?
Any thoughts?

Rightmove is the market-leading home-search website. The company has flourished by providing a range of online services to estate agents across the UK.Between 2006 and 2011, Rightmove increased net profits tenfold. In that time, Rightmove's dividend has increased from 4.5p per share to 18p.Rightmove is not just a historic growth story. Analyst consensus is for another 33.7% increase in eps for 2012, followed by a 15.1% increase in 2013. The dividend is forecast to continue rising on a similar trajectory.Rightmove is great example of the internet disrupting an industry. Prior to Rightmove's rise, the most important advertising media for estate agents was local newspapers. Now, housebuyers look on the internet to find a new property.More growth has come from the premium services Rightmove offers agents that wish to promote their properties with maximum impact. The company's mobile apps have further revolutionised home search. The demand for these new initiatives will be integral to Rightmove cementing its dominant position

"Our aim has always been to help our agents and developers succeed by delivering great value marketing and building strong relationships to support their ambitions.
"This approach continues to serve us well as we have grown our customer base to an all-time high showing that Rightmove is the overwhelming site of choice, not only for Britain's home movers, but also its property professionals."

The competition watchdog has warned estate agents that they risk breaking the law by colluding over decisions to list on the property portal OnTheMarket and remove their business from the market leaders Rightmove and Zoopla. The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA), which threatened them with potential fines and even jail sentences, said that it was aware that rival estate agents may be making joint decisions on where they list properties.
