I also have great deal on my insurance when abroad, through my previous profession, so I am not questioning if the deal is good or not, I was just stating that any cover via insurance is not free.
Tanker is also right in that the cover foreigners get here is not the same as we get when abroad, although in the countries that are members of the EHIC system it should be.
Many year ago, whilst in Greece I required emergency medical treatment, and the palaver that followed almost made it better to go private than to go through the reciprocal scheme.
No doubt if a Greek had required similar treatment in the UK, it would have been far more straight forward.
Earlier this year I read a report on the amount of money owed to the NHS by foreigners who had been treated in the UK whilst on holiday (or those who come purely for such treatments, then disappear without paying).
For a UK resident aboard, it is not so easy, as they often delay none life threatening treatments until they are certain of receiving the money.
As said, it is not a level playing field.
Mind you, the blame is entirely with our Government, as always being too quick to roll over and accept things, whereas foreign governments put themselves first, foreigners second, as it should be.
