PIPEX COMMUNICATIONS - TIPPED FOR 2004 (PXC)

moneyman - 03 Jan 2004 20:03

Tipped by the independent 2/01/2004

........."And so to our traditional "wild card". Pipex Communications, formerly known as GX Networks, is a telecoms company created by one of the entrepreneurs behind Ukbetting, Peter Dubens. It has been assembled from six smaller players. The ambitious company is generating cash for the first time but is still not widely followed in the City. It could be an undiscovered gem".

PIPEX Communications plc

Update on wireless broadband trial

PIPEX Communications plc (AIM:PXC.L) is entering the next phase of development
of its wireless broadband offering utilising its national 3.6-4.2GHz spectrum
licence. This follows encouraging initial results from the 802.16-2004
compliant WiMAX trial running in conjunction with Airspan Networks (NASDAQ:
AIRN). The trial network has achieved stable service delivery and drive tests
with Airspan's EasyST self install modem have delivered non-line-of-sight
connectivity in excess of 1km from the base station.

Understanding and demonstrating the real world performance of this new and
evolving technology is important to establish its commercial potential.
Software and capacity upgrades continue to be applied to the trial installation
to increase both its range and throughput capacity for the remainder of the
trial period. Speeds up to 8Mbps should be achievable by March 2006, enabling
PIPEX to deliver innovative and competitive broadband services to the UK market.

PIPEX is also encouraged by significant market developments involving the WiMAX
vendor community and wireless broadband operators globally. Airspan have this
week announced the commercial launch of their ASMAX product range, the world's
first fully nomadic 802.16-2004 WiMAX product line designed for indoor
self-install CPEs. Major handset manufacturers such as Motorola and Samsung
have product strategies based on the emerging 802.16e WiMAX standard and new
operating models are beginning to appear such as Unwired in Sydney, Yozan in
Tokyo and Clearwire in Florida.

The emergence of 'personal broadband' where customer connectivity is available
in locations outside the home or office and the potential for Wi-Fi / WiMAX
integration suggest demand for new wireless services will significantly increase
as compatible devices become available.

Dow Jones Newswires

0929 GMT [Dow Jones] Pipex's (PXC.LN) update on its Wimax trial in conjunction with Airspan Networks (AIRN) calls the progress "encouraging". This shows traction is building, says Investec. Notes Wimax is still in its infancy, standards have yet to be ratified and CPE equipment remains prohibitively expensive, but believes it "could well emerge as a complimentary technology by the end of 2006." Has buy rating. Shares unchanged at 10.5p. (PBA)
