Maybe Telecoms are a safe haven after all, BT results looked solid, and might see some upgrades soon. But also VOD had very strong results on Tuesday, which seemed to take the market by surprise.

Div is under threat. Certainly looks likely to be cut in 2009. Brokers are forecasting a divi under 10p in 2010.

still a divi at 8-10p should be a tidy 5% yield considering a range of 90-120p sp......

Treblewide - not if you bought at 220 it won't. I bought these for a safe boring ride delivering a ggood secure income. Having my income halved is not good.

Results looked good to me also, they have held interim dividend. The tone of interim statement was positive, with management taking decisive action at the Global Reach division.

Ian Livingston has said all the right things so far, a very switched on individual, which makes a nice change from some CEOs running our banks.

previous CEOs at bt though have been crap.

Most companies in general have crap managers actually......ohh and the gov is crap too

Cheer up marni
Some things in life are bad
They can really make you mad
Other things just make you swear and curse.
When you're chewing on life's gristle
Don't grumble, give a whistle
And this'll help things turn out for the best...
And...always look on the bright side of life...
Always look on the light side of life...
If life seems jolly rotten
There's something you've forgotten
And that's to laugh and smile and dance and sing.
When you're feeling in the dumps
Don't be silly chumps
Just purse your lips and whistle - that's the thing.
And...always look on the bright side of life...
Always look on the light side of life...
For life is quite absurd
And death's the final word
You must always face the curtain with a bow.
Forget about your sin - give the audience a grin
Enjoy it - it's your last chance anyhow.
So always look on the bright side of death
Just before you draw your terminal breath
Life's a piece of shit
When you look at it
Life's a laugh and death's a joke, it's true.
You'll see it's all a show
Keep 'em laughing as you go
Just remember that the last laugh is on you.
And always look on the bright side of life...
Always look on the right side of life...
(Come on guys, cheer up!)
Always look on the bright side of life...
Always look on the bright side of life...
(Worse things happen at sea, you know.)
Always look on the bright side of life...
(I mean - what have you got to lose?)
(You know, you come from nothing - you're going back to nothing.
What have you lost? Nothing!)
Always look on the right side of life...

In response to an earlier question as to why the divi should be cut, the answer is because BT warned that full year earnings at BT Global Services are likely to come in significantly below expectations. The boss of that sector has resigned & the BT board pointedly refused to be drawn on whether the final divi would be unchanged. Most brokers have reduced the divi to two thirds of free cash flow, giving a 2009/10 figure of 9.6p.
Of course this is all 'Informed comment' as the final decision rests with The Board, but as they are saying nothing, most brokers fear the worst.
