very big US oilies like exxon and total, and their associated service companies like halliburton and schlumberger

halifax - 13 Mar 2012 16:04 - 3109 of 5505

cynic how much have they actually invested in Iraq?

cynic - 13 Mar 2012 16:06 - 3110 of 5505

how the f would i know???? ..... more than i have in my petty cash tin for sure, and judging by the sabre rattling between baghdad and exxon, seemingly some pretty chunky caboodle

halifax - 13 Mar 2012 16:07 - 3111 of 5505

cynic as you well know selling goods and services is not the same thing as investing.

Total In Discussions To Enter Iraqi Kurdistan - CEO

Total SA (TOT) is in talks to enter Iraqi Kurdistan, the head of the French oil giant said Tuesday, the latest major to disclose concrete steps to enter the autonomous region.

The news come after the U.S.'s Exxon Mobil Corp (XOM) recently signed a deal to enter the region, rebuffing opposition from Iraq's central government which states the Kurdish deals are illegal.

Speaking to reporters on the side of an International Energy Forum summit conference in Kuwait, Total's Chief Executive Christophe de Margerie said "we are discussing" an entry. "There is nothing done yet."

"Definitely we will hold those discussions with owners of existing blocks," he said, adding any move would have to be vetted by the autonomous region's government.

Just spoken to the Listings Office.

The case is down as "Security for Costs Application", and is reserved as a whole-day hearing - 1030 til 1600.

Well, well, well Rex - bit short of the readies are we?

Should be interesting!

cynic - 13 Mar 2012 16:38 - 3114 of 5505

hali - stop being a naughty boy by trying to change the game ..... even the most moronic members on this BB (no names; no packdrill!) can see the weakness of your argument/comment ...... to provide oilfield services, there has to be a major contractor (exxon or total et al) who needs same and has invested millions even if not squillions in the specific project

halifax - 13 Mar 2012 16:43 - 3115 of 5505

cynic please try to understand selling goods and services to another party is not investing in their project, if GKP is as good as Mr Todz makes out it would have been snapped up long ago even by the cash rich chinese... stand back and think again don't be driven by emotion.

niceonecyril - 13 Mar 2012 16:49 - 3116 of 5505

noc thanks for the "rumour"

cynic - 13 Mar 2012 17:00 - 3118 of 5505

i give up with you hali!! ..... you're worse than me ..... i never put a value on gkp or even attempted to .... you asked a totally different Q about foreign companies investing in M/E, or even wanting to, which i thought i had answered quite well, even if not to your satisfaction

niceonecyril - 13 Mar 2012 17:03 - 3119 of 5505

Hali Thought you might?LOL

HARRYCAT - 13 Mar 2012 17:10 - 3120 of 5505

I heard SINOPEC interested this morning. Could be, could be not. All speculation (possibly put about to suck in private investors!!!)

halifax - 13 Mar 2012 17:16 - 3121 of 5505

cynic would you invest billions (even if you were a billionaire) in GKP at this time major companies have a duty to protect shareholders funds, even if the oil is there such an investment would be considered highly risky in view of the political uncertainties in the region. FOOLS RUSH IN.......remember what happened to BP in Iran back in the 1950's.

cynic - 13 Mar 2012 17:36 - 3122 of 5505

i couldn't possibly begin to answer that ..... however, oil exploration and exploitation is, by its nature, a very risky enterprise, and becoming more so as the "easy targets" have already been found ...... however, if one starts with the assumption that shaikan is indeed a massive site (not yet exactly proven it must be said), then it becomes a matter of risk/reward ..... it should never be forgotten that iraq (and kurdistan) desperately needs oil revenue, just as does iran and saudi ..... everyone likes to think that saudi is rock solid with minimal risk .... in fact, the monarchy is on very dodgy ground and there is also a strong islamic fundamentalist sector within the court

so, to revert to your question ..... yes, always provided shaikan is at least a very significant find, then i do think that gkp is very likely target for any number of possible suitors, even if nothing materialises for say the next 12/24 months - my personal view is that gkp will receive some sort of serious approach within the next 12.

by the way, for how many decades was bp comfortably "in residence" in persia before it all ended in tears?

".Gulf Keystone Petroleum bounced back on AIM today — after shedding 16% yesterday — as vague takeover rumours once more did the rounds, with China's Sinopec again suggested as a possible bidder"
