Although I felt I was being patient with Pet, that patience finally ran out about 8 months ago and I sold breaking just about even.
I sold mainly because I felt the situation in Iraq would not improve to such an extent that would allow companies such as Pet to prosper.
I still have my doubts, but if they are going to make good, the present position looks to be their best bet since Saddam was overthrown.
The risks are still there, but so are the rewards.
So it's not sour grapes that I sold (sometimes we all sell too early or too late) it's a heres hoping those who are still in reap the rewards of their patience.
With that wonderful thing called hindsight, I now wish I had held that bit longer, even allowing for the obvious risk that is still ever present.
Pet have worked hard to get where they are in Iraq, they deserve something if only for their resilience.
I think the next 12 months will be make or break for Pet in Iraq.

If the HCL comes to a vote,it seems that the Sunnis will give their support.

Anbar officials call for continued U.S. support, private oil investment

Sunnis have long lobbied for a strong central government that can equally distribute the nation's oil revenues and defend Iraq's borders; Iraq's largest petroleum deposits are found in the Kurdish north and Shiite south.

Al-Alwani said his primary concern was that a sectarian-divided Iraq would inspire meddling from Iran and other neighboring countries.

While Sunni territory is not known for its oil reserves, recent studies have found increased estimates of modest deposits. Al-Alwani said he invites private investors from the U.S. to help develop Anbar's oil and natural reserves, located in a southern region called Akaz.

PET used to be very high risk.Less so much now.Iraq has much more to do.More risk imo out than being in PET.Anyone who bought the same time as I did @70p,topping up @ 60.5p in profit 100%-129.75% in 7 months.PET have been happily working in Iraq for years.Southern Iraq in particular enjoy good relationship with leaders & local militia, therefore security has never been a problem.Do bear in mind that PET being from Irish is a neutral country as is Japanese giant ITOCHU. Peeps seem to have quickly forgotten Jordan PCA and recently awarded TCA over the Dhufriya.Dhufriya mentioned by David Horgan to investors @ AGM & confirmed in the Interims.

We (investors) are aware that PET are ready & waiting to sign contractS and may have already done so.List of potentials S&L, Merjan,Block 6 in the Western Desert and possible is Halfya. Latter is giant oil field would be icing on the cake.Do bear in mind that PET have long and very strong working relationship with Iraq Ministry of Oil.Who awards oil contracts? The very same Technocrats who PET went to meet recently in Iran.As you may have read co-incidently ITOCHU met with PET in Dublin immediately afterwards.

I have provided and copied as much information for MoneyAM readers to digest & decide for themselves.Copy below part of recent Interims.Previos post links to comments by Shares Mag.

Never been a better time to be buying & holding PET.Chart is very sexy with threatened breakout & more news to come.aimvho.DYOR.

Highlights: Strong operational progress

* Continued strong relationship with Iraqi Ministry of Oil
* Passing of Hydrocarbon Law will allow application for Production Sharing
Agreements
* Strong progress at Subba & Luhais field: completed surveys and initial
delivery of equipment underway
* Successful completion of Merjan Oil Field Technical Co-operation Agreement
(TCA) in partnership with ITOCHU
* Awarded a TCA over the Dhufriya oil field in Central Iraq, to be carried
out in partnership with ITOCHU

David Horgan, Managing Director of Petrel commented:

"There is no current oil and gas opportunity to match Iraq. The undeveloped
proven and probable reserves alone are immense, let alone the unexplored deeper
horizons, which have proven to hold massive reserves throughout the wider
region.

We currently base our strategy around three key partnerships; with the Iraqi
Ministry of Oil in Baghdad, with the local communities where we are currently
active in the South of Iraq, and finally with ITOCHU, one of the major
downstream oil companies in the world.

We are confident that our approach will prove to be successful. Managing TCA
agreements has provided Petrel with vital on the ground experience. We are
confident that this expertise will be applicable to potential high value
development, exploration and production projects.

After 10 years experience in Iraq, we have a built up an extensive high quality
contact base in the region and retain a belief in Iraq and its people. Iraq
today is, and will remain, a place where international oil and gas players can
be highly successful."

Maliki says no civil war in Iraq 4 hour, 06 minutes ago

ISTANBUL (AFP) - Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki said Saturday that his conflict-torn country has overcome the threat of civil war and violence is receding.

"Ethnic violence is decreasing... The civil war that Al-Qaeda wanted to spark has been prevented," Maliki told a conference of Iraq's neighbours and major Western powers in Istanbul.

"Iraq has overcome the period of danger and is stronger and more experienced today," he said.

"Our success will help not only us but also you," he said, addressing Iraq's neighbours.

Maliki asked for more international support for his government's efforts at economic reconstruction and at quashing daily violence.

He renewed a call on neighbouring countries to act to prevent "the infilitration of terrorists."

Turkey is hosting the meeting which besides Iraq includes top ministers and officials from the United States and other western powers and Middle East nations including Iran, Jordan, Kuwait, Syria, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Bahrain.

Just tuned in. Well done Jecs. Yet another example of your research skills turning up another gem - "the atmosphere is now ready for ratification by the Iraqi Parliament on a number of draft laws approved by the government, including a bill of oil, gas and Bill".

Many of this fairly tight knit group on the ADVFN board have large amounts riding on PET ~ 10's to 100's of thousands of shares, which must account for a large proportion of the PI share of PET. Just think 70K shares means 0.1% ownership of PET. The total held on this board must quickly add up to a substantial number of whole % of total shares. ( perhaps someone could hazard a guess?). Without mentioning names, I suggest that the reason for the large ADVFN board holding is the quality of the research and posters, without which PI's like myself might have just simply glanced of PET to some other O&G without getting a proper assessment of PET's potential. Furthermore the information has kept us going through thick and thin.

I expect several of us will be getting that funny feeling (however you like to describe it) as we have been on the edge for so long, seemingly so near and yet so far, and now so near it's hard to believe. It seems like the mirage is about to become reality in the sands of Iraq.

Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki told U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice in Istanbul that the time was ripe for the Iraqi parliament to endorse several draft laws adopted by the government, including those on oil & gas and accountability.

The U.S. administration was blaming the Iraqi government for failure to pass a number of important draft laws like the drafts on oil & gas and the accountability, which is known as the debaathification law.

\"Maliki and Rice discussed several issues of mutual concern and the importance of an Iraqi-Turkish-U.S. cooperation to deal with the threat posed by the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK),\" according to a statement by the Iraqi cabinet on Saturday.

\"The PKK is a terrorist organization, not just to Turkey but to Iraq as well, particularly as far as security and economic aspects are concerned,\" the statement quoted Maliki as saying.

In his speech before the Istanbul conference on Saturday, the Iraqi premier called on his country\'s neighbors to increase their security measures along their borders with Iraq and respect Iraq\'s sovereignty.

Maliki said that his government has taken \"a firm decision to close down all offices and headquarters of the terrorist PKK all over Iraqi territories.\"

\"We announce before you today that we have taken drastic measures to block any facilities reaching this terrorist organization via airports and borders,\" Maliki said, adding \"the constitution of Iraq compels us to respect relations with neighboring countries and not to allow our territories to be used to wage aggression on any country.\"

The last couple of weeks have seen important steps and progress for Petrel :

* The Prime Minister has informed the US that the time is now right for ratification of HCL
* The IMF has held high level talks with Iraq and with positive news flow
* Petrel has held high level talks with Iraq
* Petrel has held high level talks with Itochu

Some of these developments could even be inter-connected ?

Hi All,

This is by far the most important and positive development since our AGM in August !!

From AGM we knew the Government could and would force the HCL through in September. It now seems they have not yet done so in order to wait for the right moment, the right atmosphere. The Prime Minister himself says the atmosphere is now right to have the HCL ratified, and he says it to US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, so no mistake about it, it's pretty official.

It is probably no coincidence that during this week there was also a meeting with the International Monetary Fund, who will write off Iraq's debt against passing of the HCL ??

And to add to that momentum, there were high level talks recently between Petrel and Iraq, as well as between Petrel and ITOCHU !

I was aiming for end of October, which did not materialise, so I am a bit hesitant to put another time-line to this development. HOWEVER, one would expect that the Prime Minister now will have to act on his statement to Condoleezza Rice and put the draft law before parliament in near future. Could all of this be completed in say 1 month ??

Champagne advice : BUY and keep on stand-by !!

If the draft law is put before parliament - what value the share price?

Must be more than 2.50 - just reward for those who have endured the long wait.

"ELEPHANTS"

West Qurna, mapped by Soviet geologists in the 1980s but mostly untapped, is one of a dozen or so supergiant oil fields in the world. They are known in the industry as elephants, fields so large they can tip the fortunes of companies or countries.

Hi all,
Great news from Jecs bodes well for the days that lay ahead. Positive news regarding passing of the HCL would see a breakout from the resistance the price is facing at the moment at 142p and re-test 151p that although is a psychological major key level, after 2 months of consolidating i would see this price being broken. I remember one of Fingers's favourite formations which he calls a 'Mountain top Plateau' can similarly be seen on the chart.

Criteria for the plateau formation from fingers xxd site-
-After retracement with profit taking, the price consolidates for a few weeks, eventually settling at the initial peak, to form the 'flat plateau' (light blue).
-a 'close' above that 'plateau' will provide a clear signal that the price is about to make it's move.
Once the breakout has been achieved and held, it is unlikely to fall back through and drop away again.

Reminder back of "fag packet" calculations assuming $55 barrel which is on low side compared to $90...

http://www.advfn.com/cmn/fbb/thread.php3?id=8899170&from=77730
kdickson - 15 May'07 - 11:45 - 77730 of 98877

All this talk of 5 per share makes me think it's time for a 'fag packet' calculation to keep us focussed on the massive potential of PET.

Does anyone remember an ADVFN poster named edgein who was an O&G guru who used to post on the EME/VOG threads. The following part post were his thoughts on one method he used to value oil in the ground:-

The other method I use which you might prefer and I think is less complicated but just a rough guide:
Use the current oil price to work out the current Net Present Value of the oil reserves of a co. Take 10% of that value as the value of oil in the ground and that gives a present value based on the current market oil. A simplier and much quicker system to use. I personally rarely use PE to calculate the value of an oil stock My system tends to be highly conservative, but then again I'm rarely disappointed and regularly in profit.

Im no expert on valuing oil companies but, based on the above, does anyone majorly disagree with the sort of share price achievable in my calcualtions below?

Petrels presentation said Block 6 has 3 to 5 billion barrel potential.

Lets say 4 billion barrels at $55 = $2,200 billion
Divide by 2 to get into pounds = 1,100 billion
Take 10% as value of oil in ground = 110 billion
Take 20% as PSA share = 2,200 million
Split 3 ways (Itochu/Makman/PET) = 740 million each (approx)
Divide by 74 million shares = 10 /share (74m mentioned in presentation)

(Mmmm, now whos always predicted 10 share price!?)

i.e. for every 1 billion barrels, value to PETs share price for oil in the ground is 2.50

Now, toting up PETs potential contracts:-
Halfaya 10 billion barrels
S&L (deeper levels) 2 bbls (say)
Merjan 0.75 bbls
Block 6 4 bbls
TOTAL = 16.75 billion barrels at 2.50 per bbls = oil in ground price of 40 + (excludes East Safawi as well!).

Istanbul conference recommendations dominate Baghdad press

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Baghdad, 04 November 2007 (Voices of Iraq)
Iraqi newspapers on Sunday focused on the recommendations from the Istanbul-based conference for Iraq's neighboring countries which closed yesterday and sideline meetings between the participants.

In its coverage of the conference, the independent daily al-Mada newspaper published a main report in which it said, "The Istanbul conference concluded with calls for government support, a firmer grip on joint border security and a pledge by Baghdad to take prompt measures against the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) and combat terrorism. The conference's final statement
stressed that Iraqi land will not be used as a base to launch terrorist attacks against neighboring countries."

On the sidelines of the conference, Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki explained to U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice that conditions are now more favorable for the ratification of several draft laws, forwarded by the Iraqi government to the parliament, including the draft laws on oil and gas, and accountability and justice, the newspaper said.

The government-funded al-Sabah newspaper published a main headline that read, 'Istanbul conference: Behind closed doors meetings, encouraging final statement.' According to the newspaper, sideline meetings between heads of the delegations overshadowed the conference. "During his meeting with U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, al-Maliki stressed the Iraqi armed forces' increased abilities and their readiness to take over security duties in Iraqi provinces and highlighted a major leap in economic growth and a fall in inflation and unemployment rates," the newspaper wrote
Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, during an inaugural speech in the conference, urged neighboring countries to take firm steps against "groups practicing terrorism in Iraq" in reference to the PKK, considered by Turkey as "terrorist" organization.

Erdogan revealed his country's readiness to realize security and stability and bolster national reconciliation in Iraq. "We have to continue re-building Iraq," Erdogan said in his speech with the Iraqi premier sitting next to him.

Baghdad newspaper, issued by former Iraqi Prime Minister Iyad Allawi's al-Wifaq Movement, published the following main headlines: 'Allawi: Iraqis want to remain united,' 'Speaker: Vote on ministers of agriculture, health is void' and 'Government did not clamp down on oil smugglers.'

Al-Bayyina al-Jadida, another independent daily, published an article entitled, 'A certain victory,' by Ghayath Abdul Hamid in which he voiced his optimism about the ability of Iraqi security forces to achieve sweeping victory over al-Qaeda organization and stressed intelligence reports as a main weapon in the fight against al-Qqeda.
