And MFI

Haystack - 26 Nov 2008 17:18 - 380 of 974

I was shopping this afternoon, hence the lack of posts.

I went in BHS and fond loads of things to buy. Good quality Xmas gifts of the spices, various infused oils type etc. All done in excellent presentation packaging and made of good materials. Nice clothes, especially womens woolens.

Then I went into M&S. What a change! Very poor quality Xmas gifts. It felt drab and downmarket. It was like being in Woolworth. Mainly overpriced badly designed clothes. The nicer woolens were similar to BHS, but at around a third more in price. M&S were empty and BHS were buzzing. No 20% off needed to get the customers into BHS. Saying that I was told quietly by an assistant that BHS are also having a 20% off day (maybe this Friday in the store I was in).

M&S are doomed and will only recover when Green buys them for around 230p after they have dropped to about 168p.

off subject, but re WLW would rather believe the report below timed at 17:04 today

Top Woolworths investor mulls legal options-source
26 Nov 2008 - 17:04

LONDON, Nov 26 (Reuters) - The biggest shareholder in Woolworths would consider legal action against the board of the British sweets-to-DVDs retailer if it is put into administration, a source close to the matter said on Wednesday.

The source said Ardeshir Naghshineh, the property entrepreneur who owns a 10.2 percent stake in Woolworths, was still keen to talk to the board about a possible alternative proposal to rescue the company.

Woolworths is in talks to sell its retail chain to restructuring specialist Hilco for a nominal sum, and to sell its 40 percent stake in a DVD publishing joint venture with its venture partner the BBC [BBC.UL].

Newspaper reports have said that if talks fail, the company could go into administration, a form of creditor protection.

Woolworths declined to comment.

Breaking news on BBC. Woolths applied for admin.

No, I would not buy food from BHS. I don't think they even sell mainstream food. But then again I woudn't buy it from M&S either.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/7751064.stm

Woolworths enters administration.

High Street legend Woolworths with its 815 stores across the UK has gone into administration, BBC business editor Robert Peston has learned.

The move will put tens of thousands of jobs under threat.

The company's board will meet at 1800 UK time to take the formal decision.

Deloitte will be appointed as administrators to the store chain and also to Entertainment UK, which supplies books and DVDs to supermarket groups.

However Woolworths joint venture with the BBC, 2 Entertain, will not go into administration. It is owned by Woolworths' parent company, which will not go into administration.

The collapse of Woolworth is likely to lead to the closure of hundreds of stores across the UK.

And it is also likely to lead to many thousands of redundancies.

Woolworth has 815 stores. The store chain employs 25,000 and Entertainment UK employs 5,000.

The company has struggled under the weight of 385m of debt. Its problems were compounded over the past couple of months when it was forced to pay cash when buying goods from suppliers, because trade credit insurers were no longer prepared to insure supplies to Woolworths.

The company had tried all day to find buyers for its business.

Haystack.I am pi**ing myself laughing.great post very funny.which shows people that they dont need to be rude to get their point overI take it that sticky toffee pudding with thick custard dont ring your bell.I dont think a spiv like Green will get another chancehis bhs shops are like going back in timesmashey and nicey
Did you like the britvic tip.that was a shock wasnt it isnt it.watch this spaceand I think you will get another surprise with M&S? going for a glass.

Haystack - 26 Nov 2008 18:48 - 388 of 974

Sticky toffee pudding can be obtained anywhere just as good as M&S.

I have worked as a consultant at Woolworth in Marylebone, Tesco in Cheshunt and M&S at Baker Street. I have senior contacts at M&S, ASDA, a very, very senior contact at Sainsbury and out of all of them Sainsbury and M&S are in trouble over the next year - M&S being the worst.

Going into BHS was like M&S was in their heyday. Lots of things you were tempted to buy. In fact I did buy quite a lot in BHS. In M&S I only bought a packet of 3 white shirts for one of my sons to wear at school. That was only because M&S were the last stop and I had forgotten to buy them earlier. He gets through an alarming number of white shirts. At least the other one wears grey shirts at his school.

cynic - 26 Nov 2008 19:15 - 389 of 974

it will be interesting to see what general reaction there will be tomorrow to the retail sector with the final demise of MFI and WFW going into admin ...... awful lot of jobless if nothing else - qv ASC in that respect

Haystack - 26 Nov 2008 19:58 - 390 of 974

If the businesses do actually fold up rather than continue in admin then there will be an almighty fallout. One of the things that keeps M&S's sp up is their property portfolio. With the possibility of Woolies and MFI's shops being up for grabs piecemeal, the book value of retail property will need to be reconsidered. I have seen estimates in the past that M&S have around 120p or maybe a bit more of their sp made up of property value.

tabasco - 26 Nov 2008 20:04 - 391 of 974

Haystack.you lost the plot when you said sticky toffee pudding could be obtained anywhere as good as MKS we also have a lot of contactsand you are simply wrong.your contacts are shafting you.let us see!BHS is second class.a joke with those in the know!let time be the judge

The owner of Currys and PC World has warned of a "tough and volatile" retail climate after plunging almost 30m into the red.

DSG International posted underlying losses of 29.8m in the 24 weeks to October 18. The year before, it made a profit of 52.4m. Like-for-like sales across the group fell 7% over the period. The firm's losses come in a week which has seen fellow retailers Woolworths and MFI fall into administration.

DSG said it was "prepared for a recessionary environment" but added that the outlook for Christmas and 2009 was bleak. Currys and Currys.digital saw lower customer footfall during the first half with consumers reluctant to spend on big-ticket items. "The white goods market has been impacted by slowing housing transactions," the group said.

Despite price-cutting, like-for-like sales fell 7% as the division posted a 22.3m operating loss. DSG's UK computing division - including PC World - saw an 11% drop in sales. There was some cheer as DSG's programme of store revamps bore early fruit. Stores opened under the new format for more than a month were selling 25% more goods than others in the group.

DSG says it is reducing costs - including shareholder payouts and 30m in capital spending - as it focuses on cash generation.
