Rockhopper was established in 2004 with a strategy to invest in and undertake an offshore oil exploration programme in the North Falkland Basin. It was floated on AIM in August 2005. Rockhopper was the first company to make a commercial oil discovery in the Falklands. Today Rockhopper is the largest acreage holder in the North Falkland Basin, with interests in the Greater Mediterranean region.

Rockhopper returns to Sea Lion

Offshore staff

PORT STANLEY, Falkland Islands -- Rockhopper Exploration has agreed to take the semisubmersible drilling rig Ocean Guardian for at least two more wells in the North Falkland basin, with options for further slots.

The company is currently in discussions with the Falkland Islands government concerning the declaration of a Discovery Area that would likely take in the southern lobe of the Sea Lion fan. Here the Ocean Guardian drilled the 14/10-2 Sea Lion discovery well for Rockhopper earlier in 2010.

Rockhoppers expects to spud the 14/10-3 well during January to explore the northern lobe of the Sea Lion fan system outside of the proposed Discovery Area, and around 8 km (4.97 mi) from the Sea Lion discovery well. The well will also target deeper sands, including S2, a newly-identified reservoir feeder system with a total area mapped presently at 42 sq km (16.2 sq mi). It will be drilled downdip to the main part of the S2 fan, which is mapped on existing 3D seismic, and is contained entirely within Rockhopper-held acreage.

Next the company plans to drill 14/10-4 as an appraisal well on the southern lobe of the Sea Lion fan system, but timing depends on the order of drilling slots yet to be allocated.

Rockhopper adds that it has identified other potential drilling locations which would involve a combination of appraisal and exploration wells.

For those that cannot viksualise the 2 drills RKH will do in early 2011 one can look at the pic below. (and please, this is just very rough in order to illustrate and its not to scale)

The original Sea Lion discovery drill is in the red circle. As you can appreciate this is not in the centre of the structure and this is why present estimates are just P50 of 170 million recoverable barrels, as the CPR only includes the area within the red circle.

The Southern lobe is big and the northern lobe is a bit smaller than the southern one.

So, the first drill ( 1 x ) will be a test of the Northern Lobe and by association will, if it hits oil, make the P10 figure become near to the new P50 (all of the green shaded area) in excess of 1 billion barrels recoverable potential. It will derisk the blue circle area considerably and some of that, after flow test, can be added to P90 figures.

The second drill ( 2 x ) will be a test of a more central location of the Southern Lobe, and hopefully being more central they will encounter thicker net pay. Success here will allow the present discovery area of the red circle to be extended to be the size of the yellow circle, again which will boost up the P90 and P50 figures.

Further appraisal wells will be to test and prove up the area's not in the circles at the moment, so in between the north/south lobes and possibly one to the West.

Hopefully that allows a bit of a better understanding as to why the first drill is classed as "exploration" and has a massive upside effect, but no effect on the present defined small Sea Lion discovery area. Also, one can understand why the second appraisal well will have a significant effect on the P90 size and the P50 size.

One should also note that the data so far is based on 2 stacked fans however, there is a very real chance Sea Lion is up to 7 stacked fans and they have not found the oil/water contact point meaning that there might be a lot more oil there than presently envisaged in the P10 recoverable size estimates.

Hi Proselenes,

As you say, 'this is just very rough in order to illustrate and its not to scale', but it does give a very good picture of the potential of Sealion.
Many if not all of the figures are big ifs, but as that is the beast of oil exploration investing the odds look good.
There must be far more upside than downside, but it is still a hit and miss business to be in.
Interesting and nail biting times indeed.

Rising nicely and getting very close to getting the Rig back :-)

Any idea what caused this morning's activity? It seems a bit unprecedented 359 - 376 and now dropping back down.

I have made this simple "Oil Map of the North Falklands Basin", its quite easy to follow, simply follow the red arrows to find the oil migration from the green coloured kitchen area......

Hope it helps ;) (tongue in cheek)......

You will notice ARG and RKH are both going to do seismic over the open area to the North of their licenses, this could be oil filled area's and its no surprise they are doing 3D with a view to taking new license areas in the North of the North....... ;)

ARGOS RESOURCES LIMITED

("Argos" or "the Company")

Update on 3D Seismic Acquisition Plans

Argos Resources Limited (AIM: ARG.L), the Falkland Islands based exploration company focused on the North Falkland Basin, is pleased to announce that the MV Polarcus Asima seismic vessel is in transit to the Falkland Islands and is expected to arrive within the Company's licence area to commence 3D seismic acquisition in the first half of January 2011.

The Company plans to acquire 3D seismic data over the entire area of Licence PL001, and also intends to acquire additional 3D data in open acreage to the north of the licence. The proposed area over which 3D seismic coverage is planned is shown on a map available to view on the Company website.

The seismic vessel has been contracted in a co-operative arrangement with Rockhopper Exploration plc, who are also participating with Argos in the 3D acquisition in the open acreage.

Commenting on this progress, Ian Thomson, Chairman of Argos, said:

"Argos is on schedule to acquire 3D seismic over our licence area in the austral summer weather window, allowing us the possibility to commence exploration drilling as early as the fourth quarter of 2011.

Extending the 3D programme into open acreage to the north will provide full 3D coverage of the Johnson gas discovery. It will also ensure that any prospects that might extend beyond the licence boundary have full 3D coverage, and it will provide a low cost opportunity to look for additional prospectivity in the northerly continuation of the basin."

Ok its New Year prediction time and as I am in a good mood, so I think that Dawn will be gas. Finding gas and that small a size is of no use to DES, in fact its probably better news for RKH as they have the biggest (and so far not carrying any value at all) licenses in the south of the North with their 2 licenses and confirming that the gas prone source rock is active may offer hope down there. After Ernest being dry some gas at Dawn would be a nice booster for RKH, but a downer for DES as they need to find oil in order to get funding done at a good price next year.

Anyone else like to make their prediction and then wait for Tuesday 7am for news ?

I base the gas theory on the fact the share price suddenly rose but the momentum stopped, indicative of initial gas signs while drilling, if the share price rise kept going then it might has suggest oil, but it faded out. Also, they are now drilling the same level as the gas at Liz, so one would assume they will get the same result from the same source rock. See below :

So that is the guess now the markets are shut, dire news for DES who need oil but may have gas (perhaps a bit of wet gas) but thats no use. Boosting news for RKH who have no value attributed to the 2 southern licenses they hold following Ernest failure but that may need to be looked at if Dawn confirms that the source rock of that level is producing gas. A gas inflating boost for RKH but a flatulent deflater for DES.

Proselenes - 01 Jan 2011 01:50 - 4090 of 6294

I really do see Dawn as a "no lose" for RKH.

If its dry = so what, RKH has nothing in the share price for its 2 southern NFB licenses following Ernest failure earlier in 2010.

If its gas = good, the source rock is active and it offers hope for the 2 southern NFB licenses.

If its oil = good, the source rock is active and it offers hope for the 2 southern NFB licenses.
