In a much expected speech President Cristina Fernandez announced a further escalation of the Falklands/Malvinas sovereignty diplomatic dispute with the UK including formal ‘militarization’ complaints before the United Nations, a personal attendance with a delegation from all parties next June 14 to the UN decolonization committee and called on PM David Cameron to “give peace a chance

“Unlikely” Peru would back Argentina in a new Malvinas conflict
Peru’s former Foreign Affairs minister, Jose Antonio Garcia-Belaunde, says it is unlikely that Peru would back Argentina if there were a new conflict with the United Kingdom over the Falkland Islands, newspaper El Comercio reported.

Lawmaker says Chile should keep distance from the Malvinas issue
Lawmaker Ivan Moreira from the ruling coalition junior partner UDI said that Chile should not get involved in the Falklands/Malvinas issue which has to be addressed between Argentina and the UK, and recalled that Chile has its own problem with the coming International Court of Justice dispute with neighbouring Peru.

I understand that Argentina has offered a new deal.
If we give them Scotland, they promise to give up any rights over the Falklands.
Looks a good deal to me.

Marky - agreed! It is just diversionary tactics.

Just keep looking at the lefthand graph above - it tells its own story.

US disregards Argentine claim of UK’s Falklands’ and South Atlantic ‘militarization’
It took a couple of days but finally on Wednesday US State Department spokesperson Victoria Nuland said the US “has no concerns” about the alleged ‘militarization’ of the South Atlantic which was denounced by Argentina last week before the United Nations at three different levels.

Agreed there Greek, looks like the US are changing stance.

greekman - 16 Feb 2012 13:17 - 5860 of 6294

Hi Markymar,

Having read the report twice, I feel that the US are only backing the statement by the UK that they are not militarising the south Atlantic.
I think their stance on the Falklands issue re ownership is the same as a few months ago. At that time they stated that the UK and Argentina should have talks and that they were not taking sides in the issue, whereas before they agreed that the Falklands were British and that talks were not needed.
Obama appears to want UK backing in everything military they are involved with, but won't reciprocate.
Typical of his 'I'm alright jack' policy.
The next time the US want our backing, even if its just for political reasons, unless it benefits us, we should tell him where to shove it.

h
that reminds me of something i once read i think it was from the reminiscences of a stock operator. how having been given more than one dud so called inside tip and lost a bundle one wants to telephone the tipster to give him what for and a good piece of his mind. only to be reminded that it may not be wise to upset him, after all he may not give us any more tips he is told.
LoL i did when i read it.

Nearly three decades after the Falklands War, tensions between the UK and Argentina have resurfaced. The UK insists the Falkland Islands are rightfully the UK's. The Argentine government maintains the islands, which it calls Las Malvinas, belong to it. But what are the details of each side's legal, historical and geographical claims for ownership?

Quiet a balanced argument but Argentina signed a declaration in 1816 and became the first country to gain official independence in Latin America.

How come you can claim an island when Argentina did not exist?
