'Keep an eye on Sterling Energy, run by veteran explorer Harry Wilson. The company is already a producer of gas in the Gulf of Mexico and, more recently, of oil off West Africa as a co-owner of licences in Mauritania's Chinguetti field.

The spotlight is now moving to Madagascar, which the world's majors are hoping could be on the verge of a boom. US giant Exxom Mobil recently said it could be another Nigeria or Angola.

Sterling has two blocks off the Madagascar coast covering 28,000 acres, More importantly, its partner and co-operator on the licence is now Exxon, to whom it farmed out 70% of its interests.

Word from Houston is that Exxon is accelerating its plans in the region by two years and could start drilling in early 2007.'

What did the investors chronicle says about Sterling Energy this week?

Not many small oil firms can boast of diversity or a track record like Sterling Energy's. So while the company's exploration opportunities off the coast of Madagascar catch most investors' eyes, there are plenty of other strengths. For example, its Chinguetti Well in Mauritania may not have met expectations but it's still making A LOT OF MONEY, as are the offshore assets in the Gulf of Mexico.
Sterling even has a pipeline in the US generating revenues of $2.5MILLION (1.3MILLION) a year, and is starting to create its own prospects in the region. A strong oil price can only help, too, both with deal flow and with profits.

Many thanks for posting that, and a fair assessment of the current situation IMO.

I would have liked them to mention the workaround for Chinguetti, and the production increase expected when the compressor on the FSPO has been fixed, which is due this quarter I believe, but I guess that will leave them something to comment on in the future!

Anyone any news on Madagascar or Kurdistan?

These two fields offer potentially mega returns...

I am not expecting anyhting at the moment.

Madagascar looks like being drilled in 2008 at the moment, although I have read comments that suggest Exxon will try and do it next year, but nothing more than a rumour IMO.

Kurdistan is a bit of an unknown, and therefore news could ciome out at any time, we will have to wait and see.

One negative for Kusdistan would be title, where there is clearly a dispute over who can award licences between the local kurd administration, and the American appointed Iraqi government in Baghdad.

Thanks Andy, very much a wait and see at the moment.

IMO there is still plenty of upside elsewhere, but it would be good if Madagascar started next year.

i think, they will wait till they bring the production to level stated before they come to the market. they have no choice but to perform and increase shareholders' value. patience though
