IQE - Silicon is the future (IQE)

Master RSI - 03 Feb 2003 11:56

IQE is the leading global outsource supplier of customized epitaxial wafers to the semiconductor industry.

Their technology is of most advanced like AFM means Atomic Force Microscopy and moves a minuscule cantilever over an objects surface, a sharp tip passes over dips or rises punched in the surface and reads out digital information. This technology is not going to slow down it is going to speed up and has to replace most existing forms of memory storage by virtue of capacity and size.

The future of nano-technology, these tiny/minute robots would need very small processors and most sure strained silicon could provide these.

The low share price is due to uncertainty as to when the cash will run out, but I don't think this will happen as cash is of 12 to 15M and NAV of 30p, and losses are going to drop on the next 3 month and we could have profits on the Q4 2004.

Latest news from the Chairman were" The Group remains confident that it is in a strong position within the outsourcing market, although the protection of its cash position is paramount.
With a broad product portfolio allowing the customer base to use IQE as a 'one stop shop', a large available production capacity and a strong balance sheet, the Board believes the Group will benefit strongly as the overall semiconductor industry recovers and will continue to strengthen its position as the leading outsource supplier of advanced wafer products to the sector. "

Nearly all the recent results have been encouraging. Q4 accounts are being completed (30th Dec 2002). IQE know where they stand, if things had got worse their would have been a trading statement by now, and with Amberwave (IQE's partner) increasing its Asian presence, this is a bullish trend and a good point to pick up the shares @ 4.25p

IQE (16.5p) View from Midas (Hold):-

15/10/09

IQE

Almost a year ago today, Midas Extra recommended shares in IQE , a Welsh-based technology firm.

The company is small and specialised but it is a world leader in a product called gallium arsenide, a crucial ingredient in the software chips for a wide range of products, including the increasingly popular iPhone.

Most people have heard of silicon chips but gallium arsenide chips are much more powerful, much more efficient and much more flexible. In fact, the first iPhone had just one such chip, later models used four of them and now some mobiles have up to 18 of them, as phone manufacturers turn mobiles from something used to make and receive calls into mini-computers.

Gallium arsenide is also used in laptops, satellite navigation systems in cars, TV satellites, CDs and DVDs. It is used too in so-called LED lighting, which is highly energy efficient and expected to replace ordinary light bulbs entirely over the next ten to 20 years.

Last week, IQE expanded its presence in the LED field through the acquisition of NanoGaN, a technology group spun out of the University of Bath. NanoGaN has pioneered a way of making next-generation lights that are more powerful, more efficient and longer lasting than anything currently on the market.

The lights, known as LED and blue-lasers, will be used for electronic devices, such as phones and computers, but also for homes and businesses. The technology behind these lights was invented by Professor Wang Nang Wang, chief executive of NanoGaN and he is joining IQE as chief scientific advisor.

The acquisition does have an element of risk but IQE chief executive Dr Drew Nelson, has minimised the downside by paying just 400,000 up-front with the remaining 3.2 million to be delivered as and when NanoGaN meets certain targets.

IQE is expected to deliver profits of 2.2 million this year, compared to a loss of 1.4 million in 2008. In 2010, profits of more than 3 million are expected, rising to 5 million the following year.

Midas verdict:

IQE shares were 12.8p last October. They fell as low as 6p at the beginning of 2009, not because the business was doing badly but because the market was worried about small technology stocks. Now they are 16p, a rise of 25 per cent. There is plenty of further upside in this business, especially after the recent acquisition. HOLD.

2009 Stepping up the pace

We detailed our positive thesis on IQE in our recent initiation note (see IQE: Proven resiliency, July 2009). After todays interims, in which management point to a return to pre-recession levels of trading in Q309 and recent share gains, we remain bullish on the second half and the groups longer-term prospects. The wireless supply chain is on an even keel after a period of nervousness in H109 and IQEs financial performance should see a step-wise improvement in H209.

$16.2 m contract win

IQE plc

30 Oct 2009

IQE plc (AIM: IQE, "the Group") the leading manufacturer of advanced
semiconductor wafers to the global semiconductor industry, announces
that it has been contracted by a leading US RF products and foundry
service provider TriQuint Semiconductor (Nasdaq: TQNT) to provide its
Gallium Nitride (GaN) wafer products for the creation of complex,
high dynamic range circuits for future defence and aerospace
applications.

IQE's New Jersey operation sub-contract Gallium Nitride (GaN) wafer
products to TriQuint as part of an $16.2 million Defence Advanced
Research Projects Agency (DARPA) multi-year Gallium Nitride (GaN) R&D
contract. The programme aims to advance GaN research and develop new
generations of compound semiconductor circuits through the Nitride
Electronic NeXt-Generation Technology (NEXT) program.

"GaN is already recognized for its ability to handle more power per
square millimeter than other semiconductor technologies like gallium
arsenide, and much more so than silicon. Yet even with the advances
TriQuint has pioneered, today's analogue GaN technology has frequency
and power limits.

"NEXT circuits will be `game-changing` technology that could
radically improve performance in defence and aerospace applications
like phased array radar and communications. NEXT calls for complex
digital GaN circuits that also have very high breakdown
voltages-something that silicon can't do, and that is also beyond the
scope of today's other semiconductor processes," said TriQuint's
Principal Investigator, Senior Fellow Dr. Paul Saunier.

Alex Ceruzzi, VP and General Manager of IQE's New Jersey facility
commented:

"IQE and TriQuint have enjoyed a close relationship over many years
and our role in this programme clearly demonstrates IQE's ability to
provide world class materials across a broad RF product portfolio.

"The four and half year NEXT programme lead by TriQuint will utilise
IQE's GaN wafer product expertise with the ultimate aim of developing
and producing advanced semiconductor chips with operating frequencies
up to 500GHz."

IQE's New Jersey facility is the leading GaN HEMT epi foundry, and
provides a complete portfolio of RF products, ranging from high
volume HEMTs, HBTs and BiFETs to advanced GaN based products. The
Group's Gallium Nitride production capability was recently increased
through the acquisition of UK-based NanoGan Limited announced earlier
in October 2009.
