Cynic,
First time anyone's said I talk sense.... :-)
Slightly off topic: I've been playing with a demo CFD service for the last few days. Mainly to see if I'd be any good at trading (as oppossed to investing). God it's scary. How do you guys make any money. I've lost about 45% of the "pretend" cash in 2 days. Suppose I wouldn't be that reckless with my own cash, but easy to get carried away. Back on topic. It just compounds my fears of what could go wrong if people are trading with big losses on these margin products, and the rug suddenly gets pulled out.......

Soul Traders,
I think you're right. It's the first time I've tried using them, and it'll be the last. I don't know if spread bets are any safer (I've never used them either), but I'm sure these geared products are influencing market volatility, one way or another. I suppose with the correct training both could be used safely, but still too scary for me.

Soul,
I was starting to look at both, from the point of view of being able to short, as that's my inclination at present. Spread bets are at least tax free, and on the surface seem to be no less risky than CFD's. Not sure I'm cut out to be a trader though, so unless I can find one that's virtually risk free (e.g. you can only lose what you have on account, and not be liable for potentially spiralling debts), I think I'll give them both a miss.

Set my stop loss at 150p, who knows were this is going, think ive been very sloppy recently i think you call it greed. but hey its experience.
I think what vog needs an rns concerning reserves and not estimates this would at least stabilise the spread and bring more value to the company.
I feel better know having made this decission , will it get to 150p i dont know but if it does am out.
goood luck to all those who hold.

Strawbs .... I think the gearing on CFDs and spreads is similar ..... Insofar as I ever manage to make money (I do sometimes!), it is because I can watch throughout the day ... I also have a good guide at IG who also manage a small discretionary portfolio for me ..... Trading at the moment is certainly pretty scary it has to be said!
Btw, keep your fingers crossed as Dow has now gone back through 11100 mark and holding, after an earlier low of close to 11000

Unfortunately we should have set our shorts between 220-250 last week!
Lots of us should know better, but we never learn!!!

I issed the last bit of trading, but assume there was no logic behind the fall in VOG - e.g. no RNS that I missed or similar

as i mentioned elsewhere, trading this week was going to be peculiar anyway as B/H tomorrow and de facto on Friday and B/H UK and US on Monday

I'm relieved by what you say strawbs about being 100% cash. sold out shares on monday big falllers only to see them rise tons yesterday, felt a right pilchard. But I can't help wondering regardless of high oil price whether oil shares will still fall.

But presumably you feel better today having watched them drop again? I have the same 'pangs' of should I buy back when I see them rally..... So far staying out has proved to be the sensible option though. I sometimes wonder if it's almost a drug....pressing the buy/sell button. That's probably why most people end up giving all their profits back. Hard to break the addiction.

Couldn't resist these any longer and bought at 171p.
I reckon the majority of spread betters and/or short sellers are out of the way now.
Onwards and upwards I say !!!!

anyone know when new reports are expected on other wells? SP is yo-yoing too much lately, looking forward to a bit of news that could stabilise it. I'm not aware of any change in the fundamentals which would have resullted in a drop from 240p to 160?? I went in at 200p

Queen,
absolutely no change in fundamentals.
Indeed the last announcement was excellent.
The general market shakeout has hit VOG as much as many other oil and gas companies.
Barring another severe market correction like last week the SP should comfortably exceed 200p next week.
The first real resistance will be around 220-225p.
