The week ahead...
By Julie Fisher | Fri, 10th January 2014 - 15:06

This week will see the release of three housebuilder trading updates and the third-quarter sales report from fashion retailer Burberry Group.

Monday 13 January

Trading statements

AGM/EGM

Leyshon Resources.

Tuesday 14 January

After a quiet Monday, housebuilder Barratt Developments (BDEV) will publish a first-half trading update on Tuesday.

Analysts' expectations: "The pre-close statement, we believe, will reiterate a continued robust trading environment in terms of reservations and price and further progression in margins," comments Deutsche Bank analyst Glynis Johnson.

She forecasts a 12.1% increase in completions and a 5% rise in the average selling price. She has a 'buy' rating on Barratt due to its "strong earnings momentum potential".

Valuation: The stock is trading on a 2014 price/earnings (P/E) multiple of 13.2 times.

Economic news

The week's economic releases will begin on Tuesday with the consumer and producer price indices (CPI and PPI) for December.

CPI inflation was down to 2.1% in November, close to the Bank of England's 2% target.

"There has been much talk about the impact of utility price increases, most of which will have fallen in December," says Investec economist Philip Shaw, but he notes that it is likely to add only 0.1% to the year-on-year figure as power prices rose a year ago.

A 0.5% rise in petrol prices is also likely to have added 0.1% to CPI inflation, but flattening food prices should help to offset this and Shaw concludes: "We are forecasting an unchanged inflation rate of 2.1% and are still confident that it will fall below target over the coming months, with a chance that it happens this time."

PPI input prices have fallen for four consecutive months due to weak commodity prices, with a 0.7% decrease in November, and Shaw comments: "On balance we expect a fifth consecutive decline in input costs, although a 1% rise in oil prices could make it a close-run thing. We are forecasting a 0.2% monthly fall."

He also expects "a small increase" in the output price inflation measure to 0.9%.

Wednesday 15 January

A second housebuilder will report on Wednesday, with a pre-close trading update from Taylor Wimpey (TW.).

Analysts' expectations: Johnson has a 'buy' rating on Taylor Wimpey and expects its update to be "robust".

Her expectations for the company include a 10% increase in revenues, an 8.7% rise in volumes and net debt of £49.7 million (down on £59.9 million a year earlier).

Valuation: Taylor Wimpey's 2014 P/E multiple is 12.5 times.

This will be followed by a third-quarter retail sales update from fashion retailer Burberry Group (BRBY).

Analysts' expectations: Deutsche Bank's Warwick Okines forecasts retail sales of £522 million, representing a 12.5% year-on-year increase.

However, he comments: "Recent adverse currency movements result in a 1-2% decrease to Deutsche Bank profit forecasts, and with limited potential upside to our discounted cash flow-derived price target we retain our 'hold' [rating]."

Valuation: Burberry trades on a 2014 P/E multiple of 17.8 times.

Thursday 16 January

Housebuilders will continue to dominate the company news on Thursday with a pre-close trading update from Bovis Homes (BVS).

Analysts' expectations: Johnson expects "little surprise from Bovis, which has already published detailed guidance. We anticipate Bovis to show increased evidence of the benefit of its growth strategy," she predicts, rating the stock a 'buy'.

"The pull-through of new land should deliver a strong improvement in operating margins, with the double-digit percentage increase in site numbers and the mix effect of average selling price further driving earnings growth at the group ahead of peers."

Valuation: Bovis is trading on a 2014 P/E multiple of 12.2 times.

AGM/EGM

Friday 17 January

Economic news

Friday will see the publication of December's retail sales figures from the Office for National Statistics. Sales were up 0.3% in November, although this was down on previous months' rises.

"A positive CBI distributive trades survey has encouraged us to expect another increase and our forecast is another 0.3% monthly rise," Shaw predicts.

"We would warn though that because of shifting shopping patterns, it is virtually impossible for the ONS to adjust accurately for seasonality at this time of year and that December's numbers should be taken alongside January's for a gauge of the strength or otherwise of spending during the festive season."

Trading statements

William Hill, Spectris, Debenhams, T Clarke, Stobart Group.

AGM/EGM

The Character Group, RCG Holdings.

AV. looking good. I am a long term holder. I just wish I knew what was behind such a run. Nothing fundamental to back it up as far as I can see. Is someone stakebuilding?
