From this monring's FT.com:

Shares in Victoria Oil and Gas surged more than 25 per cent yesterday after the Aim-listed company received confirmation that it had made a big gas discovery inRussia.

Independent consultants DeGoyler & MacNaughton confirmed that Victoria had discovered 500bn cubic feet of recoverable gas, up from the previous estimate of 16bn cubic feet, at its West Medvezhye gas and condensate project in the Yamal Nenetsk region of Russia.

The company, which floated last year, was founded by a group of former employees of Yukos, the collapsed Russian energy group built up by Mikhail Khodorkovsky, the imprisoned Russian oligarch.

The discovery is believed to be the largest discovery of natural gas by an Aim-listed company. One analyst said: "It's certainly the biggest in many years. It's huge."

The field is bigger than several of the North Sea's best-known fields such as Ravenspurn and West Sole, and is only slightly smaller than the Amythest field field, found in 1965 and currently operated by BP.

D&M predicted the well could even reach 2,300 billion cubic feet.

The region in which the project is located contributes about 20 per cent of global gas production annually.

Victoria said it had a strong relationship with Russian gas company Gazprom, which would allow it to sell on the gas via Gazprom's gas distribution system.

However, Victoria has yet to negotiate an agreed price with Gazprom for its gasdiscovery.

Next year, Victoria plans to drill three additional wells at the site. William Kelleher, executive director at Victoria, said successful tests of these wells could further boost the valuation put on the company's assets in the region.

Mr Kelleher joined Yukos in 1998 and was the executive vice-president for exploration in the Central Asian region outside Russia when he left the now-collapsed Yukos.

The discovery is a vindication for Mr Kelleher and 15 other executives and technicians who left the Russian oil company Yukos before its collapse.

Zac Phillips, an analyst at stockbroker Ambrian, said that, while developmentrisks remained, this "upgrade represents a step-change in the outlook for the company".

He added: "The potential reserves of 4,400 cubic feet could place the company firmly amongst much larger Russian and former Soviet Union operators such as Sibir and JKX Oil and Gas."

He raised his estimates of Victoria's net asset value to 501p, of which 297p was based on recoverable resource estimates.

He also suggested a fair value of 306p per share.

Victoria shares closed up 11p at 57p yesterday. Now c. 112p

Does anyone know what mid cap companies like, burren, dana and biggies like bp have in terms of gas reserves. Does Victoria's compare with them? I'm hoping it will rise like Cairn, and the SP might do a White nile, but I don't know.

insiderinside - 18 Nov 2005 02:57 - 23 of 2511

well done holders - good to see - good gains on good news - now take care - its Friday - most short term will not hold over a weekend - a large gain - the shorters were probably in late afternoon - going long - to pump it up - to change to short in the morning - their buys - become sells - sells on sells - too much stock - it drops - more sells - far too much stock - this is the way they work - and why the big push up end of day Thursday - as they go long before changing to short in the morning - a shorters pump then dump to start the fall

catch the spike - either open - or first 30 minutes - selling pressure will be heavy - and heavier mid - late in the day - just a warning - expect a fair downward correction by late afternoon -

today is not a day - to put your long on - be sensible

All IMO - DYOR

rayrac - 18 Nov 2005 07:59 - 24 of 2511

Went to the agm yesterday. It was interesting! Doesn't the West Medvezhye VOG block look small in relation to the Gazprom Medvezhye field next door?!

bhunt1910 - 18 Nov 2005 08:59 - 25 of 2511

I suspect that all the weekend press will pick up this story - so it will get massive publicity over the weekend - which I think might create additional interest early next week.

Not sure what will happen today - still massively undervalued according to brokers note - and greed takes over - so would not be surprised to see it finish around the 150 mark. But I am no expert in these matters - just an ordinary punter

LONDON (AFX) - Shares in Victoria Oil & Gas shot up another 18 pence to 130 this morning, having surged around 73 pence since news broke on Wednesday that resources of half a trillion cubic feet of recoverable gas have been confirmed from discovery well 104 at the company's West Medvezhye gas and condensate

its big saintserf.... do you need divine guidence to make a decision??? just watch it go up and muse over what might or might not have been....at least that way you cant lose but oh you cant win either.. what a dilema to ponder oops its gone up again!!!!!!!!1 hmmm let me think about that.

bhunt1910 - 18 Nov 2005 11:51 - 31 of 2511

Well if current value being touted about by brokers is around the 300p mark - why has it stopped only half way? - what are the uncertainties.

Logic would suggest that if you piled in now - you are sure to double your money.

I know markets dont work that way - but strange that its taking a breather so soon - even though it has trebled in last few days.

ateeq180 - 18 Nov 2005 11:55 - 32 of 2511

Certain trades are appearing at low prices,is it some one had filled a buy orders for this morning or what they are all appearing at different prices, any one please help.

Mr Mole - 18 Nov 2005 12:56 - 33 of 2511

Certainly taking a breather at the moment...I'd like to think there was some 'big' press coverage this weekend to push things up and away on Monday. I was in the scramble this morning to buy, and consequently, by the price now, probably paid too much. However, if we hit 2.50/3.00..it won't matter so much.

gavdfc - 18 Nov 2005 13:03 - 34 of 2511

Was mentioned twice this morning on CNBC. Once in a general market round up piece and also on investors clinic. No position myself, but well done to those who were in before it started it's rise this week.

moneyplus - 18 Nov 2005 13:41 - 35 of 2511

mr mole--I'm like you probably paid too much today but weekend comment should see the rise continue next week. couldn't resist joining in the party!!
